Too convoluted. Give us some details so we can catch up.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not the OP, but I read this as being like something that happens frequently on the "World of Warcraft" forums.

Poster wants a legacy server. People point out that if the costs of getting said server up, running, and maintained would be worth the expenditure, Blizzard would do it.

They haven't yet.

Poster replies, "But me (and my friends) will pay them!"

Your $15 is not worth a multi-million dollar expenditure, sorry... Cost vs profit analysis is not yet in your favor.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
SA^^ Thank you. I thought I was looking at some kind of personal vendetta.

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you so much. That's exactly what I meant.

If I decided to kindly explain to everyone I've seen leaving an angry demand as to why a multimillionaire dollar company is so stupid as not to be be swayed by one potential offer of $30-50 from that particular person to buy their video game versus the many, many thousands localization would cost, I'd have no time left in my week.

It's like a rash. I don't understand how people can keep on typing the same thing over and over whenever they don't get a game they want, and their brains not automatically implode as a safety feature to protect the rest of us.

"Company X is so stupid! Why don't they want my money??? I'm almost throwing it at them!" And pffft! Safety feature activated. Better for all.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I'm trying not to be mean here, because unlike you, I'm not...you know, mean, but do you honestly have any friends at all with that attitude? Does anyone who posts these types of secrets have actual friends? Because if you think someone is "too stupid to ever talk to again" because they didn't understand a fairly trivial concept or because they disagreed with you slightly on a trivial topic, then I can't imagine you're good at keeping friends around.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the OP - It's a trivial concept to you (and to me, I admit, but I'm not a gamer) but it's a pretty basic one. If a person just doesn't get it, I'd be exasperated with them too and I'd get tired of their complaints (which are based on not getting that concept) pretty fast and feel less inclined to hang out with them. And so what? That's my business.

Unless OP has a completely unique set of opinions that nobody else on the planet shares, it's unlikely they won't be able to find some like-minded people. Making friendships based on having similar worldviews is a sound practice and a very common one, so I don't see what the big deal is.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
da

But, see, OP didn't specify if he's talking about people who just don't "get it", or people who don't know.
To me the secret reads like OP is exasperated that people don't know the facts, and rather than educate people, he'd just rather call them stupid and be done with them.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Why should OP be obligated to educate people, though? If they'd rather just slow fade and talk to other people, that's up to them, isn't it?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not their job, no, and they're not obligated to do anything.

I'm just legit wondering if he's able to make any friends? Most of us, at one time or another, have made comments like "TAKE MY MONEY" and such.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"Making friendships based on having similar worldviews is a sound practice and a very common one, so I don't see what the big deal is."

Yeah, but you're never gonna find someone who agrees with you 100% of the time or who understands 100% of the things you understand. If you ditch everyone the minute you discover something like that, you're gonna wind up with no one.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
The secret gives no indication that the OP requires all of their friends to be in 100% agreement with them about everything. It only mentions this one issue. Lots of people have dealbreakers when it comes to friendships, and that's their call, surely?

It does seem like when the games no one expected to get localized actually get localized, they get a ton of buzz in the gaming press. I'm not sure if that translates to sales, but it certainly can't hurt.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew a guy who was really into collecting those old lesbian pulp novels.

Good dude.

I'm sorry, but being ignorant about the realities of the video game business doesn't necessarily translate to being generally overall stupid.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Holy shit, really? Somehow I don't think they're saying that as a serious comment on the economic viability of localising a video game.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I thought "turnover" was the rate at which employees left a company and were replaced. What's wrong with saying "revenue"?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
OP is a Brit, sorry. British term.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I can get this, OP. I'm a business owner and I actually DO understand things like hidden costs, the difference between net and gross, etc.

I've had a lot of fandom acquaintances over the years who just really didn't understand that kind of thing at all. It does get really tedious sometimes because everyone has a lot of opinions about how companies should operate and what products they should release, but they generally don't have the slightest clue what would go on behind the scenes to make that happen.

I honestly don't understand what the secret is talking about, but I love the pulp book cover they used for it

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Not only that, but also depending on the age of your market there are issues, too. Like say you have localized a few games that are similar but different--so your entire userbase, or most of them, plays all of them. What will usually happen is that they will pick a favorite, reasonably, because the amount any one person can spend is always limited, and keep spending on that and keep all the others in the lurch. You're very very lucky if you have several similar projects that are successful.

Now, if you choose to localize something that doesn't fall into that, you'll have all these people bitching about "OMG why did they release X and not Y?! How stupid are they?" when the reality is that we know damn well our market is being tapped out and we need to get into others to turn a profit (unless, of course, those users want to see the expense of play go up to justify the work it takes to keep their precious running with a new title and probably the same amount of staff).

*too busy ogling the cover to read the secret*
litalex: Jon Stewart in princess drag (PrettyInPink!JonStewart)

I don't know about the secret, but that pic looks like it's depicting either a scene from a brothel or a bunch of lesbians.
