Books/comics/manga/etc. that you wish were more popular.

Rant about 'em here. :)

I love Kaze Hikaru!

West Coast Avengers is the greatest Avengers series ever and everyone who likes old-school superhero comics with tons of cheesy soap opera drama should read it.

I feel like there's a tiny but dedicated cult for The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl out there and I just haven't quite found it.

My original answer would have been 20th Century Boys but I actually saw a secret here for that the other day and I was delighted about it.

CrossGen

They set out to fill in the niche of comics that weren't superheroes. They had some talented writers and artists. Many different genres. Lots of great female characters. I'd just love to talk about the possibilities.

I wish more people were aware of Secret Six and All Star Superman. I see so many people moaning about how "there's no superhero comics about ___" that would be completely solved by those series.

I also wish more people talked about the Yu-Gi-Oh manga, and that the people who did talk about it didn't talk about the early stuff and late stuff as if they were totally separate - putting them together is a lot more fun.

Not sure if "more popular" applies since all of these have been ended for years and AS Superman was a limited maxi-series.

Nextwave!

(Nextwave. More robots and beer than the nerdiest frat party.)

If I could have wished for anything from this Secret Wars event, it would have been that Warren would have just burped out another Nextwave entry from the depths of his beer mug. No need for continuity, making sense, anything. But he's busy, I get that.

Nextwave just makes me happy every time I read it.

It's like Shakespeare, but with lots more punching.

I was thrilled when Captain Smerica and the Mighty Avengers had their big Nextwave storyline.

The Major Thunder/Grom (However the title will get translated) comics. Though I heard they are finally getting released in English sometime in the future, so that's great! I can finally buy them without jumping through hoops.

I really want to read them and own them and all.

Are these... Russian comics?? Wow. Modern Russian things so rarely become known in the West. I'm impressed. Maybe I should read these, too.

No kidding? I love the art, but I'd kind of given up on finding more than the first volume translated.

Tegami Bachi and Dengeki Daisy. Especially Dengeki Daisy.

Oh yo, I read Tegami Bachi. I love the characters, but I might like world it's set a little more!

I have a Dengeki Daisy fanvid saved even though I've never even considered reading the manga. It's just so *pretty*.

Is it that good? I'm vary of reading shoujo these days - most series do not look good once you read them after puberty. I recently tried to reread Handsome Girl and holy crap I did not get far.

The Thursday Next books by Jasper Fforde. They're so bizarre but exceedingly well-planned (for the most part - there are times that it's a little deus ex machina). I would have thought geeks would devour them. They are largely based on a world where literature is cherished - the character is part of an agency that investigates illegal copying and fake manuscripts, etc, and she eventually learns to enter into the fictional text and interact with the characters. So maybe it's just a little too nerdy, because it helps a lot to know the classics of literature.

I hear there's a Fforde Fiesta in Swindon (where the books are set), so it's probably more popular than I think, but I only know one other person that's read the books, and that's my mother.

I haven't read them, but I've heard of them. They actually sound right up my alley! How would you recommend I go about reading them? From the first book on?

The Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan. I reread them for the millionth time and loved them just as much as the first time, then promptly went looking for fic. There's so little of it an it's all getting a little old now. :(

I want more fic and actual good fanart. All the best fanart was sadly generic or fanart for a different fandom someone tagged with BMT.

David Lopez!

David Lopez, the recent artist on Captain Marvel, is really cool, and I don't think he's being noticed much.

Worm by Wildblow, an original web serial about superheroes. It's really dark and subverts typical superhero tropes. It's kind of popular I think, but I want more people to know about it SO THERE CAN BE MORE FIC, PLEASE, OMG.
