27: Read Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth, or at least the first book, Wizard's First Rule. Kahlan is a female Canon Sue.

But at least Goodkind went all the way and made Richard a male Canon Sue.

I'm not saying the term 'canon sue' isn't over-used for female characters, but sometimes there are fictional characters, male and female, that just scream Sue.

[identity profile] lisiche.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god, agreed. D: I can't believe how much time I wasted on that damn series before it finally hit me. That, and Goodkind's an ass. "I'm not writing a fantasy series. I'm writing social commentary." ...Jackass. YOU'RE WRITING A FANTASY SERIES.

66- She's an okay artist, but she's a better colourist. If she applied for a job as a colourist, I'm sure she'd get it.

Yes, she probably IS better than all her haters, artwise, but she just has such an attitude problem that it's hard to like her. I've seen her rants, she's so RUDE.

Questionable

[identity profile] zanesama.livejournal.com 2008-02-11 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
I'd say I agree with you, but until she figures out form, her colours would diminish line art.

I used to feel bad for her, and still sort of do, but chick needs to grow up, and start wearing some big girl ovaries.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
01. Yeah... Let's just say that you're not the only one ^_^;

02. I know what you mean; some of my absolute favorite manga series were left unfinished. Minekura Kazuya is sort of a repeat offender, but at least she's still working on them (albeit slowly). It's a different story if you're holding out to read the end of X or Riot or whatever.

04. I still think he's cute, too! And I have no problem admitting it XD

05. Not sure who that character is, but I just gotta say that that's a lame-ass reason for dislike someone. Plus, what kinda idiot would wear shoes like that?! The shoes have me assuming it's an recent FF character, haha.

29. That's just about the only version of Batman that I like.

37. I don't think anyone could miss the blatant Salieri/Mozart in that movie :Db

42. I used to post there a lot too, but then I just got sick of the fact that any post with Batman/Superman/etc. got tons more replies than other (i.e. less trendy) stuff. It's not a question of "I want tons of comments!" either; it was just frustrating to see a bunch of people going "Batman can breathe in space!" while completely ignoring the scanlated BDs and so forth.

58. Maybe it'd have an actual fandom IF IT WAS ACTUALLY RELEASED IN EUROPE. Gah, I'm been waiting to play it for ages now! And I've already gotten spoiled, as per usual -_-

64. Ooo, that's an intriguing cover! I'll have to keep an eye out for that book.

64

[identity profile] starboardsided.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not just an intriguing cover, its a FABULOUS read.

9. ...Except it does? Really. TRC is a whole different manga with different characters (now CLAMP, don't you dare contradict me on this one!) So really, you can still like Li and care nothing about the other two Syaorans. Trufax.

12. Spaced ♥

58. I like Odin Sphere! Granted, I've only watched videos of the cutscenes because I'm in Europe and shit, so I can't really go into the fandom until I can actually PLAY the thing.

20: Seconded
37: Hell yes, I love this movie too! But I really don't ship anyone Mozart's too good for them XD;

2: I'm sorry to hear that. As a writer, I run into a lot of times where I think "Hey, these characters totally uninterest me. They must be uninteresting to everyone else!" But that's not really the case, most of the time. So forgive him/her for now; it's got to be more frustrating to them.

8: Oh, I don't know. Sex is a delightful component to a lot of relationships, but it's not necessary. Sometimes it makes relationships sweeter, and sometimes it ruins them. In your mind, a platonic relationship is much more psychologically fulfilling. It's not better or worse, but I think that's cute. :3

13: There's nothing wrong with that. Extra taboos can be very fulfilling in fantasies. Fantasy is a very potent force in our lives, and it so rarely influences our real-life actions.

22: Love comes in many types and flavors. Sometimes it takes a little ... actuator ... to get you to see things a certain way. =3

27: Well, I agree with you on one point: sometimes, there are very poorly-written canon characters. But the contrast of characters is what makes them all so beautiful.

28: YES! OH YES. I'm so rarely emphatic about secrets, but I agree with you totally. Pyramid Head is frightening in a very violent way, but Giygas is the only end boss that ever gave me that pit-in-my-stomach fear that "You can't do anything" like he did.

And I totally agree that the fact that the final conversation being from a violent rape scene adds a whole new dimension of horror to that conversation.

But I always felt a little bad for him, because (unless I'm terribly mistaken) his motives for gaining that much power were initially benevolent.

31: Well, there are interests, and there are obsessions ...

35: I love that Mia is always more well-endowed than the character that's channeling her, so I always blink several times at the way the clothes subtly alter to emphasize that fact. Oh Mia.

41: My brother and I often make up funny scenarios involving a fictional character named "Yaoi Fangirl Supreme." She's hyperbolic, but I'd like to think she's a potent satire. We both like BL stories and manga, but fans of anything can get weird really quickly.

45: This reminds me of something. There was a brief stint that I spent as a pre-Law student because I saw a commercial for the Ace Attorney series. It really does glamorize law, but I think television has done a much more detrimental job of turning lawyers into omnipotent legal beings.

It's frightening to know how many law students are at my college because of crime-scene shows.

48: I agree. I never thought the "rape" part was very poignant anyway. It was just sort of a shocking thing that got the attention, much like a "boo" scare in Japanese horror movies.

53: A lot of anime start out as novels, I've seen. Actually, a lot of movies, do, too. So keep your hopes up!

... or what is it? It's lazy, but it's fun to adapt.

57: Well, what is "fat?" You shouldn't be depressed about your bodily image, but body type has nothing to do with intelligence, mental health, or the force of your will. Besides, sometimes it looks good on a person.

64: There's a lot of sexual imagery in the whole mythos, anyhow. Oh humans. <3

27.

[identity profile] linkeepsitreal.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Except that implies that NO female character could EVER be badly written. As though just because something is published, the characters are incapable of being one-dimensional or sue-ish.

I never bash female characters, I love seeing a kickass girl character, whether she's strong and abrasive or cute and sweet. But seriously - there DO exist girl characters who are badly-written. It doesn't make me a misogynist to be irked that a character isn't being written well. Neither girls NOR boys should be above criticism.

I do agree people use it as an excuse to bash characters, though, and that it's overused.

15. I completely agree. And after seeing what happened to Adam on Heroes, I don't think there's anything that can or will change my mind about that.

53. I love that series to death, but I don't think it would have the same impact if it were a novel.

[identity profile] klytaemnestra.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)

11. Billie Piper is hardly large. I think part of it are the outfits she's wearing. Hoodies are hardly slimming. Martha isn't rail thin either ... in fact, really none of the companions are that unnaturally tiny. Donna, anyone? I know that some of the earlier companions tended to be small, but that was usually in height and therefore were really petite in build. And er ... as inspirational as you might want to make this secret be, you make it sound like everyone is shallow and only wants a size zero -- and yes, I am a size two just to get that out of the way before someone decides to think it's a weight issue on my behalf, lulz. Why the Doctor of all beings really care about the body weight of one of his female companions? 'Cos, yanno, I know when I meet potential friends I base them all on how they look. /sarcasm

15. Oh definitely. I mean, technically I would kind of love to be able to live forever but at the same time Jack is cursed to watching everyone he ever loved die without the hope of actually being able to die himself. Immortality would only be bearable if you had someone else along for the ride.

24. Xianghua is awesome. I'm a little saddened that she hasn't been announced for SCIV, but I suppose her story is more or less complete and I'm happy with her ending.

57. If your friends would laugh at you because of your weight, then they're hardly your friends.

11 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-02-10 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
You gave me a pretty lengthy response, so I'll do the same, hopefully explaining a thing or to.

I wasn't trying to make it seem as if everyone wants to be a size zero. Mostly just me, actually. It's an issue for me, and I've struggled with my weight for many years, because I was trying to get down to an admittedly unhealthy weight for by build. And it sounds silly, but when I couldn't get below 110 lbs (I never resorted to anorexia or bulimia, btw, so I'm not trying to say 'poor me I had an eating disroder' or anything) I really did kind of look at the older companions (as well as other females/characters I looked up to at the time) and got upset about my weight. I was small in height as well, so it didn't matter to me if that was why they were so small. And I never thought that the doctor's character was meant to care whether his companions were small or not, because I knew it had to do with casting, but it was still like a kick in the face.

When the new series came along, and the first companion ended up being average in size and build AND the love interest, I just felt really good about it as a result. I'm not claiming that it's good to have this reaction but that's how it was for me.

37. I love the director's cut too, and let me tell you, you're not alone on the whole Salieri/Mozart love.

32 & 41: I hear you. I don't like yaoi/slash either, and I can't help but wonder if my friends and fellow fans who I communicate with think less of me for it. I'm particularly annoyed by the types who brand people like me homophobes. Liking slash =/= supporting gay rights.

60. (Yay, all-encompassing PR secret!) I can't say I like those folks either, even if I consider myself somewhat of an "old-schooler" PR fan. I've seen everything, and I make my opinions from there, not what those elitist/purist twits say you should like or dislike. It makes me wonder why they're still in the fandom after all this time if they're so resistant to everything beyond MMPR. (And for the record...Zeo is my absolute favorite season, and I'm quite fond of Space, early Turbo, and Mystic Force, as well as MMPR.)

[identity profile] forchancookie.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
32/41. I'm constantly amused with stupid fangirls who think they're crusaders for gay rights just because they get off on buttsex. Wait, I take that back, they get off on cartoon buttsex and they're squicked out by real gay men having real sex. -_-
