Current movies

What have you seen recently and enjoyed?

Thread mostly because I want to talk about how much I loved the Martian.

I just got out of the Shaun the Sheep Movie. It was cliche, but so much more enjoyable because there was so little dialoug. Actually, when they started the musical montage and the music had lyrics, I was actually kind of annoyed because I enjoyed the lack of talking so much.

I was cracking up at the expressions of the citizens of the city whenever they'd spot the flock's antics.

I know it's fiction, but I was watching it going "Wow, the UK is a weird place." It's my favorite animated movie of the year.

The Martian

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-10-07 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
There was nothing I didn't love about this movie. The science was so realistic, everyone was believably brilliant at their jobs, Matt Damon held his own and was amazing, and things cut to the rest of the cast just enough so it didn't get dull. I'm usually not as big of a fan of hard scifi. I'm much more into fantasy. But this movie was perfect.

Also, the Tolkien nerd in my loved that little reference, particularly because it was a book reference and not just a movie one.

I am hopefully going to see it this weekend. I read the book and loved it. I am glad it has gotten such good reviews. :D

You should go. It is slightly different in tone from the book, from what I've heard. But it is really good.

Yay!! Can't wait to see it. :) Sci-fi is my favorite genre, and there are *never* enough good sci-fi movies.

I haven't seen it yet, but I downloaded the gay Jack Black movie that there was a secret about yesterday. I'll probably watch it tonight.

The Intern

[personal profile] shortysc22 2015-10-07 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw the Intern starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway with my mom last night and we both really enjoyed it. It was a nice movie about two people just being friends and boosting each other in their lives.

Robert De Niro is a retired widower who is looking for a purpose in his life when he signs up for a senior intern program at a startup run by Anne Hathaway. It's a feel good movie that we both enjoyed, though the target audience was much older than me (I was by far the youngest in the audience), I still really enjoyed it.

Re: The Intern

(Anonymous) 2015-10-08 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I loved the crap out of that movie, and so did my husband and my 14-year-old son. It was kind of refreshing to watch a movie where you could root for everyone, and even the horrible conflict in the marriage was resolved in a positive way. And they didn't go for cheap "LOL old dude is clueless with tech" jokes and instead had him actually understand it.

We were afraid they'd go for the May/December office romance thing, but they went for an age-appropriate one instead, and that too was incredibly refreshing. How the hell does Rene Russo still look so great, my goodness.

Tremors 5

[personal profile] fingalsanteater 2015-10-07 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, this exists. Yes, it's actually decent. Partially, though, because it apes off other, better movies. Jamie Kennedy puts in a decent performance - one of his better ones.

What what whaaaaaat? I fucking love Tremors and I need this in my life. Was it straight to DVD, will I be able to find it easily(ish)?!

Question about Martian

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm actually talking to a friend about a movie to see this weekend, and hearing that Martian was good has me thinking about that one. However, this friend does not do fantastical violence well - even the later Harry Potter movies bothered her, though we were still in high school at the time. Is it a bad idea?

(I'd ask her, but she's one of those "oh I'll be fine" types who really won't be.)

Re: Question about Martian

(Anonymous) 2015-10-07 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Any violence would be realistic.

Fantastical violence? Not sure what that means. There are a few scenes of Watney being injured and one scene of him having to staple his wound, but they are very short and easy to close eyes during.

Not current, exactly, but I finally caught Ex Machina on DVD and was surprised at how eerie and tense it was. I wasn't pleased about the ending, but the whole movie was super-stylish and full of dread (in the best way.)

I kind of hated that movie, save for Oscar Isaac's performance. It was too stylish, in a way that rang false and put me off. It was definitely tense, though.

I recently watched Jupiter Ascending and I actually really enjoyed it, like the whole thing was wacked out to hell and back and the main villain was reaaaaaaally all over the place but fuck it, it was fun. Plus I liked most of the cast and it was a very pretty movie, also Sean Bean lived!

It wasn't really all that recent that I saw it - back in May, on the plane home from NZ - but I liked it too. It's a bit cheesy but I don't think that is a bad thing every so often.

Plus yes! Sean Bean lived! XD

elaminator: (Hannibal: Hannibal (robe))

Re: Current movies

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-10-08 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so none of these are exactly current, but I watched 'En kort en lang', 'The Hunt' and 'Charlie Countryman' for Mads Mikkelsen. I plan on watching Valhalla Rising next (partially because of that secret from a while back).

I already knew this from Hannibal, but he is a spectacular actor. I've found him completely convincing in every role I've see him in, no matter my feelings on the work as a whole.

Like, 'En kort en lang' was a fucking awful movie (that didn't even attempt to make him sympathetic, then gave him a happy ending he didn't deserve) and the writing was atrocious, but I think he did the absolute best he could with what he had. (I wanted to like him, I just couldn't because the film didn't give me any reason to. That I even wanted to given how much of an asshole he was impresses me.) He was pretty in that anyway, and I wouldn't mind seeing him in a good romantic comedy because he could probably make it interesting. (Why the fuck this movie is even titled a romantic comedy idk. What were you people thinking?!)

But The Hunt was a heartbreaking, magnificent film and really knocked me for a loop. (It deserves all the awards!) I haven't gotten that upset over a movie in quite a while; despite the acclaim I didn't expect it to be so well-made or haunting. And damnnnnnnnn, Mads played the shit out of that role; it was nice to see him so incredibly charming and sweet and not have some agenda or hidden darkness. It was not nice to see him be so broken down by everything. :( Again though, at least he was really fucking pretty (the glasses! the plaid! the leather jacket!) and his acting was on point.

Watched Charlie Countryman on a whim and was surprised at how little he was in it, but not all that surprised at what a terrible person he was. Mads seems to play the worst people, lmao. (Not that I'm complaining, exactly. He's had an interesting career!) Anyway, I couldn't really cheer for Nigel, but he was very believable and frightening in the few scenes he did have. (And, again, I wanted to like him despite having no reason to because Mads is just so damn charismatic. It's scary how good he is at drawing you in.) Apparently I liked the film more than everyone else did; while it was cliche and weird I still found it entertaining.

The Martian was very good. And it's teh most recent film we've seen in theaters. I still have yet to watch Mad Max, though it's sitting right next to me. >_>
