I totally think they could have happy endings that don't involve being dead. It would just take far better stories than this show seems interested in telling.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure that's the consensus among SPN fans.

I don't think it would be a happy ending, but it would be an ending at least.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Because closing the gates of Hell would mean just hauntings and werewolves and witch shit. That's easy! I think Sam going back to school and maybe meeting a woman and getting a puppy and Dean becoming the next Bobby advising hunters and working on his freaking car for fun sounds like it would be a happy ending.

Saying, "The only way the characters would have a happy ending is if they were dead" is so unimaginative.

It's probably more because the show keeps piling shit on them, so they no longer believe that it could end well. And they have so much baggage by now, I honestly wonder if Sam would manage to go back to school and be a normative human being again.
I mean I dig your ideas, and I definitely want them to have their happy ending, but I'm not sure the show can pull it off at this point...

They both look tired and burnt out and the season is just starting. Death would be s relief.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you new?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes hope takes a long time to stamp out.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
God forbid! That's the worst!

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought that all the way back in Season 1. They will go out in a blaze of glory together.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Dean should have killed Sam and then Death relocated Dean to out of the solar system at the end of last season.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think either of them should have come back after dying the first time.
This show was such a disappointment for me when I finally decided to gove it a try because From the visuals you might expect something like The Blues Brothers meets The X Files and they give you a soap opera with a few monsters thrown in.

Tbh, I want to see that mainly so I can see the fans go ballistic.

Bonus points if Cas hugs Dean's corpse or something.

Put their characters and actors out of their misery.

I agree.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-14 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The preferable twist would be them becoming lovers in the last five minutes they live. Much like cheerleaders having sex in horror films.

I haven't even watched past S4 and even I can see what you mean about this. I'm not sure I ever 100% support the idea that the only way for a story to end is for the character to die. But there are definitely some stories where it's...the cleanest narrative option, I guess?

I mean, I'm glad Buffy didn't die, but part of me (the part of me that likes a nice clean literary arc) will always think the ending of S5 was the ending that should have been.

SPN is a lot like that only more so. At a certain point I just feel like, what's left of these people as people? Do they have the capacity to downshift into any sort of normality anymore, or has it been completely beaten and trained and traumatized out of them?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I'd say they find the fountain of youth in some sense and return to child state; only a happy monsterless one, where they can live like normal people with normal angsts and joys. A happy side effect would be that they can't be brought back from heaven or hell for the umpteenth time.

Haven't watched SPN in years but I agree with this. I feel like Sam and Dean are incapable of being happy long term. There's always going to be some new threat to take care of, they're going to keep getting killed and bringing each other back... It's a vicious cycle I doubt the show will ever break, so why not?

Haven't they both died multiple times already? This show will never end.

This is how I thought Naruto would end. Instead, we got the most bullshit, unbelievably contrived ending ever.

I haven't watched this show in years but this is pretty much how I figured it would end, it's probably the best ending they could get really(but who knows what they'll actually end up doing).

(Anonymous) 2015-10-15 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
In my head, 'canon' SPN is Seasons 1-5 (excluding the last few minutes of 5x22 where Sam is shown out of hell), and 'apocryphal' SPN starts right after that. So anything post S5 for me is just one long-ass AU fix-it fic that fails at fixing anything.

Sam in hell for eternity and Dean trying to live a life without Sam is the best ending for me.

I'm 95% certain that's where Kripke wanted things to go in his final season, but then CW was all WE WANT MOAR and it had to be rewritten but I have no doubt that's how it was supposed to end with both guys locked in Hell forever more. Sometimes I wish we'd gotten that ending.
