New series debuts

What shows that debuted this season are you watching? Why do you like them, and would you rec them to other people?

Grinder

This is a show that I knew either would be really good or really awful. And it is actually really good. It is really funny (and I don't like most comedy shows) and a lot of the legal stuff mentioned is actually pretty good.

Given the ratings it will probably go the way of Selfie and get cancelled, which will really make me sad.

Legit just thought that said Grindr and did a double take.

And I just googled that.

I also had to google it because I was like "How the hell would they make a show about grindr?!"

lol not what I was thinking at all

Yes, no, not a gay sex show. A lawyer show. Still pretty awesome, though.

I have watched all four currently-existing episodes of Blindspot. I still can't decide if I like it or not.

Ooo, Blindspot. I thought of watching that (mostly because Jaimie Alexander is hot) but didn't. The commercials didn't entice me.

...I like the Muppets. It's like having a piece of my childhood back, and they grew up with me a little. The people that think they're acting too old or serious now don't I think really remember all that much of early Muppets stuff. There was always the adult element, to keep my generations' parents entertained.

and miss piggy was always an asssshooooole.

Still not over the Piggy and Kermit breakup. Yes, she was awful to him, but it just feels like sacrilege to break them up.

And with the adult thing, it isn't that the adult element is there. That doesn't bother me. That was always there, as you pointed out. It is that the whole tone of the show feels different, like it is in a mid-life crisis, like the Muppets are now just dealing with the same sort of depressing office and relationship life that people do. And that was never what they were. It just feels different. Less positive more, I'm not sure the word, not angsty but more about adult responsibilities as the theme or something.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and I like it because Stephen's sense of humor appeals to me; I think he strikes the right balance between silliness and seriousness. Watching him geek out over things and enjoy himself on a regular basis again is nice; it's a fun part to my day. He also seems like a genuinely sweet, charismatic person which helps. I've been following him for quite a few years and almost feel like I've grown up with him, so I'm not stopping now.

I like the show a lot, though sometimes it feels like a longer version of The Colbert Report. (Which I am completely fine with.)

Yes! I love him. I've never seen his other show, but this is the first talk show that I've actually enjoyed. I really should go watch some Colbert Report because I love his sense of humor.

If you like The Late Show, I think you would enjoy TCR too. He focuses a lot on politics (which shouldn't be a surprise by now) but even when the subject is frustrating (especially then) he makes you laugh.

He did a Hobbit themed episode, btw. Ian McKellen was on the show, as was 'Smaug'.

His interviews with James Franco were always great too because they would end up playing Tolkien trivia.

I love his show, too. I think he's really settled into a good groove as time's gone on. I love his discussion about the presidential election stuff (his analysis of the Democratic and Republican debates has been particularly entertaining), and I really like the way he discusses religion when the topic comes up on his show. It's honest yet open and respectful, and that's so refreshing.

And yes to him getting his geek on, and getting to talk more with some of his idols (I enjoyed his conversation with Elvis Costello last week). I'm also very pleased to see he's keeping with the tradition of singing-his "America" song with Jack Black was beyond awesome, and I'm just a sucker for guys who love music and have good musical taste and all that sort of thing :D.

Also agreed on him seeing like a really, really sweet guy. That combined with his sharp mind is a big part of why I admire him so much.

Stephen is one of my favorites when it comes to politics. I know that's seen as shameful to some since he's a comedian, but he discusses the candidates and topics I care about in an amusing yet insightful way that keeps me interested and makes politics fun. Not many people can do that in the way Stephen can.

Agreed about religion. I liked what he said when he had Ellen Page on, which was basically "What I believe sounds crazy even to me, but I still believe it". That isn't something you normally hear religious people say, and it endeared him to me even more.

Plus, when Cruz was booed he asked his audience to stop. Despite not liking Cruz in the least I thought that was classy.

Stephen should sing and dance every episode! The tap-dancing he did was so entertaining, and he seemed genuinely good at it! I could've watched him do that for ten minutes, lol. His song with Jack Black was great, but I think I might've enjoyed the one with James Corden more.

Stephen is one of the celebs I would want to meet most. He seems like a chill dude that would be delightful to talk to.

I hope he gets to blab about Tolkien or Captain America at length at some point in the near future.

No, yeah, that makes total sense to me, too. I think some of the most insightful commentary about politics has always come from those who are able to find the humor and absurdity in it, and often that job tends to fall to comedians :p. And he clearly knows what he's talking about, it's not just grade-school jabs at their looks or silly impressions. He actually discusses and dissects their policies and their stances in depth.

So true about him freely admitting that in regards to religion. I liked when he and Oprah discussed their favorite verses, and why they liked them-Stephen's had such a sweet reasoning behind it. I heard somewhere once that he taught Sunday school (don't know if he still does)-that'd be a fascinating class to sit in on, I'd imagine. I also like that he will call out the BS side of religion when necessary, too, and proves that you can have faith and religious beliefs without having to blindly follow or agree with every single thing your religion says or does.

Much respect for the Cruz thing. I don't agree with the guy, either, but I still want to hear what he has to say, and I wouldn't want people booing someone I did agree with, so... Fair's fair.

The tap dancing was adorable :D. Especially seeing how giddy he was about doing it, talking about it being a lifelong dream and all. His song with Corden was lovely, too, yes-and on that note, can I say how utterly refreshing it is to see the late night hosts being friendly and getting on well? I know that may not make for an attractive story for the media outlets who like to turn this stuff into a competition, but the whole "late night wars" thing got so ridiculous and petty after a while. I'm fine with these hosts just focusing on doing their thing with their respective shows and supporting each other.

He's on my "want to meet" list, too :). And yes to seeing him get all in depth on that stuff in the future. I'm not even overly familiar with those fandoms, but his passion for them always makes me want to learn more about them and other geeky stuff he likes :p.

Well, SOME of it is jabs at their looks (Trump being an Oompa Loompa, for instance. Which doesn't get old for me) and silly impressions, but a lot of it is actual discussion of the topics. I like how Stephen has been challenging the candidates about certain beliefs they hold, and wanting them to get in-depth about their plans. He clearly wants to inform people instead of just making jokes.

Stephen's verse was cute! I had never heard it before but I liked it. Good sentiment, lol. I've read that Stephen was a Sunday school teacher too, though I doubt he has time for it these days. I think he's said as much in interviews before? He's always quoted the Bible quite frequently (and effortlessly) and despite not being incredibly religious myself, I respect that kind of dedication. That he believes while still being open minded and not discriminating against people is one of the reasons I like him so much.

Yea, I don't know much about Corden but he's been lovely to Stephen and vice versa. That's refreshing. The only kind of 'wars' I am here for are the 'wars' that went on between Jon and Stephen and Conan O'Brien. Stephen and Jimmy Fallon had some good moments together too, back on TCR.

This is true, good point. I should say that I'm glad it's not JUST that sort of discussion :p. Definitely agreed on challenging them, too.

(I'll never tire of jokes about Trump being an Oompa Loompa or his toupee, either. The guy is a comedian's dream in terms of joke material, really.)

I liked it, too, 'cause I can identify with his "need to learn not to worry" sentiment he shared :D. But yeah, exactly, I'm not very religious, either, but I respect people like him who know their stuff and who can engage in thoughtful discussion on that topic.

Hahahahaha, YES! Oh, I miss the Stewart/Colbert/O'Brien/Fallon stuff. They were so fun. That ice cream song...that entire episode...I was rolling with laughter.

I love that Jon's made a few appearances on Stephen's new show, too. Their friendship and support for each other is so adorable.

Jon's appearances are so cute! I want him on once at week. At least. I know that's probably a lot to ask of him, but come on. He should totally have his own segment where he talks about a specific topic, kind of like Lewis Black did on TDS. (Not gonna happen, but a girl can dream.)

He's pretty geeky on the new show too. There was the Elijah Wood episode where he starts out by promising not to talk about the Silmarillion and then Elijah just encourages him and they talk about the Silmarillion.

He could easily spend an hour talking about Tolkien. Now I want Stephen to have Vin Diesel on and them to geek out over Silm.

Yes, please. I love nerdy references to one thing in another thing. It makes me really happy. Colbert is so adorable when he's geeking out over Tolkien

He does it so, so often. He can't help himself. When Jon Stewart left The Daily Show he made an appearance and did an extended LOTR metaphor.

I actually said, "Awwwwwwwwww..." out loud at my TV during that whole segment :D. That was one of the sweetest and most adorable things ever. I love the way he can always make Jon blush and laugh :).
