Agreed on not being crazy about 3D. One thing I miss from the 2D is that it wasn't just the characters stylized, the entire movie was. of course it's technically possible to do that in 3D, but I don't notice them actually bothering.

It does kind of seem like they haven't moved past the stage where they're showing off how realistic their shiny new technology can look, even though it's been a while by now. Hopefully people will experiment with different styles more as time goes on.

Yeah. I mean think about all the little details, like how in Mulan the smoke curled like in traditional Chinese ink paintings, or the way Hercules looked. Those had so much style.
All the 3D movies, however, kind of have the same general look about them in terms of environments. I feel like you could mash a lot of them together, or transplant the characters from one to another, with hardly a sense of dissonance.
Time for more experimentation for sure.

This is my big complaint with Disney/Pixars 3D films. They just really lack individual style.

You compare major 2D animation releases and there's everything from Sleeping Beauty's tapestry backgrounds to Prince of Egypt with it's hieroglyph-derived character design to Spirited Away's hyper detailed painted backgrounds. Most 3D seems to end up being generic cartoon realism with minimal stylization. Every release shouldn't look just like an updated Shrek movie, ffs!

It's like they fell into the same trap as most major videogame studios did, when literally every major AAA game was bloom-n-brown a few years back because 'realism'. Forget the characters, I want to see better art design in EVERYTHING. 3D as a medium gives SO MANY more options than 2D, and Disney isn't taking advantage of it.

I definitely get your complaint, even though I like 3D myself (though I wish modern animated films weren't almost exclusively that). The Kung Fu Panda movies sorta have their own visual style at least. (Disclaimer: I don't particularly care about KFP, but I'm an animation nerd, and that stood out to me.)
