I'm also cautiously excited for it but also not so keen on the 3D. Seems to be improving though.

I don't care whether it is 2D or 3D as long as the animation is actually good. I don't believe any format is superior (I feel the same about practical effects vs. CGI). Just look to the How to Train Your Dragons for an example of how 3D can be just as good as 2D. It is all in how you use the technique. As long as they do a good job, it doesn't matter either way.

I like 3d animation just fine, but I wish it hadn't replaced 2d for disney. I wish they were still making movies in both styles! They both have different things going for them. And yeah, Moana would be gorgeous in 2d.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-26 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The video will still be in 2D. I'll wait.

I feel you. The 3D movies including Pixar ones and Tangled always feel kinda cold to me compared to the 2D ones. Also people had much more freedom in character design.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-26 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This! To me, it's especially the case for movies with human characters. Something about the animation and the designs (mostly speaking about Disney here, since a lot of their recent designs are ridiculously similar) just isn't doing it for me. i usually don't mind it as much with non-human protagonists.

i can still watch a 3d animated movie and enjoy it. Some are amazingly pretty. But they definitely don't have the kind of warmth good 2d animation has. Was going through James Baxter's tumblr yesterday, and god his videos are gorgeous.

Are they ever going to do 2D again after The Princess and the Frog's profits disappointed them? I just kind of assumed they'd be sticking to 3D now unless there was a good reason for them to think there's a ton of demand for 2D.

I like the 3D films but I do prefer the 2D ones(but I'll admit a large amount of that preference is due to the fact that I grew up with 2D animation so nostalgia is definitely playing a factor). I thought that Disney shut down their 2D department though so that's why there's no more 2D films?

Either way I'm interested in this movie.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-26 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm cautiously optimistic since I was burned (hah) and left disappointed by Frozen but I'm excited to see the finished product. I'm also happy to see that she's a bit thicker than the other princesses (even Merida should have a LOT more muscle than what she does have b/c archery and swordfighting)

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
You should just assume everything Disney makes from now on will be 3D.

Might be nice if they worked that Paperman style into a full length film tho.

yawn

Agreed on not being crazy about 3D. One thing I miss from the 2D is that it wasn't just the characters stylized, the entire movie was. of course it's technically possible to do that in 3D, but I don't notice them actually bothering.

It does kind of seem like they haven't moved past the stage where they're showing off how realistic their shiny new technology can look, even though it's been a while by now. Hopefully people will experiment with different styles more as time goes on.

This is my big complaint with Disney/Pixars 3D films. They just really lack individual style.

You compare major 2D animation releases and there's everything from Sleeping Beauty's tapestry backgrounds to Prince of Egypt with it's hieroglyph-derived character design to Spirited Away's hyper detailed painted backgrounds. Most 3D seems to end up being generic cartoon realism with minimal stylization. Every release shouldn't look just like an updated Shrek movie, ffs!

It's like they fell into the same trap as most major videogame studios did, when literally every major AAA game was bloom-n-brown a few years back because 'realism'. Forget the characters, I want to see better art design in EVERYTHING. 3D as a medium gives SO MANY more options than 2D, and Disney isn't taking advantage of it.

Ugh. I hear you. I'm not a fan of 3D at all. And about the art - one of the most amazing Disney movies ever was Mulan, which drew its art from traditional Chinese paintings. I love the idea of the art style getting influence from the (2D, obviously) art style of various other cultures.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Disney said they would no longer be doing 2D animation.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
pretty sure they said that in the princess and the frog director's commentary yea

I'm from Hawaii and this news disappoints me too. There's so many things they could have done to evoke artistic designs that are reminiscent of materials used etc. but I am glad that they cast a local girl for the main character. Hope they included more actors like that.

I guess I don't know what that means. If there's a '3d' movie, they generally have a '2d' option? I mean, 'The Maritian' is showing at my local in both, so why would this be just one, when nothing else is?

oh you sweet innocent child

they completely gutted their traditional animation department after PatF– like, absolutely fired everyone, sold the animation desks (my college art dept received some of them as donations at the time) and equipment. unless something huge changes, we aren't getting another 2D disney movie for a very long time. maybe out of an offshoot Florida arm of the studio, but nothing big budget.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-27 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This looks fine to me, but man the current trend of hyper-realistic background and really fake cartoony characters creeps me out. Charlie Brown and The Good Dinosaur both just look wrong.

Man, I like 3D, but now that you mention it, I wouldn't mind more 2D films, either.
