Nobody cares how weird and awkward I am. People aren't laughing and cringing at my nerdiness nor do they notice my ineptitude for small talk.

Actually this is the truth though. In our minds we tend to over think things we do and assume that other people notice the things we're embarrassed about as much as we do. In reality people are too busy going about their own day to worry about what someone else is saying or doing.

Also more people than you think are just as clumsy with their small talk.

And honestly the only people who would publicly laugh and mock what you're saying or doing are pretty immature themselves. Their opinions are pretty meaningless honestly.

So you've seriously never talked to someone and thought to yourself "man this person is super awkward" or "holy shit this is the worst small talk how do I get out of this" or anything like that?

Not saying that OP isn't just hyping it up due to anxiety, but the whole "people don't notice!" is just bullshit.

Occasionally but it's not something I really think a lot about.

I guess what I mean is that most people probably don't care a lot about it I think. Or at least aren't seriously judging in the way that OP seems to think.

Yeah, sure. Let's say you notice it that's a small enough percent. But the percentage of times you would notice that and actually give a shit about it? That's like ... one in several thousand interactions.

It's still tremendously self-important to think that it matters.

Well not everybody has anxiety in the same way.

Some people have anxiety about people around them judging them, some people have anxiety about what horrible germs they might have, some people have anxiety about other things.

It's pretty shitty to tell someone that they're self absorbed because they have a different kind of worry then you, or they care about something you find silly.

Tell that to my anxiety. Maybe it will listen to someone else.

It's not your anxiety that won't listen; it's your amour-propre.

or you're just a narrow minded asshole who can't understand anything you think is dumb.

Some people are self-conscious and worry that people may judge them. Maybe they have encountered people who judge them and laugh at things they do.

A good while away from the computer has given me time to realize what an absolute and total asshole I was being.

I am not the OP but I've had similar problems/feelings and I took offense, and in the heat of anger, acted like a complete and utter idiot and said a bunch of things.

I really should have stepped away from the computer at that point. Anger makes you stupid I guess.

I disagree on whether the comment was helpful, but hey agree to disagree.

I barely left my apartment and no one noticed or cared. No one called, emailed, or messaged me. Not my advisor, not anyone of the people I work with, absolutely no one.

I could have been shot that first day and bled out in a ditch and it would not have made a shred of difference.

There's your hard reality.

Maybe it's just you. Maybe your so utterly negative that others put you out of their mind.

It's not a lie. It's just a reality that you've built for yourself. And you probably want it. You want people to hold you in contempt because it's not really a failure if you failed yourself.

The thing is, convincing you otherwise is a pointless endeavour. You don't want to change, you want to wallow in this. And you've put a lot of work into putting off anybody who might have gotten close enough to change this.

So, rather then waste energy on this, I'm going to hit "post comment" and not bother to check it, forgetting about you.

I agree. It's kind of freeing actually. It's okay if I make a mistake because I am not important enough in people's eyes for them to remember it.

It's more that in the day to day interactions of most of our lives, very few of the blunders we are apt to make are that important. Nobody is going to give a fuck fifteen minutes from now that you said something wrong or did something that made you look like a dork. And the idea that it's terrible that you momentarily looked like a dork comes from pride, from the feeling that only looking cool and being right at all times can suit your idea of yourself.
