So this happened

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I was walking in the local shopping center today, and I saw a girl (young woman? Hard to tell, late teens to early twenties) curled up against a window. I walked up to her and asked if she was okay.

I couldn't really hear her (hearing issues + soft voice/almost whispering isn't a great combo), so I asked her to repeat what she said. She did, and I swear I thought she said "I'm homeless."

I didn't really know what to do, so I got one of the nearby store clerks to help her, then awkwardly walked away. :/ I was just surprised and confused and handled the whole thing, well, awkwardly.

What would you have done? And if I HAD been sure she was homeless, what could I have said/done?

nothing.

I would have offered to buy her a meal or given her some food. I don't know what else there is to do.

Probably would have looked up homeless shelters in my area and then asked her if she wanted to call them. Or if there was anyone she would like to call in general.

Re: So this happened

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly? Were I her, I would have been offended and embarrassed by the intrusion.

AYRT - ... oh, shit. Well, like I said I wasn't sure whether she said homeless or something else, so I thought if she was in some other trouble, I could get help for her.

Now I'm worried I humiliated her, though. :(

ayrt sounds like someone who would rather die than be embarrassed by receiving tbh, and that's not true of all people.

It's true that she could very well be embarrassed, but if she's a teenage girl and not an adult, and she doesn't tell you to get lost, it's better to try to help (within limits) than worry that helping might embarrass her. If you can't do or think of anything to do to help her, then yeah don't embarrass her by confronting her, but if you have something useful to contribute, like asking her if she's okay and getting her someone who might be better equipped to help her...it's really not the end of the world for her.

Are homeless people abnormal in your area?

Sometimes I'll give them money, if they ask.

Maybe look up some local homeless shelters and give her directions and the phone number, if she doesn't have a phone call them yourself and ask if they have openings. And maybe call her a taxi or give her bus fare to get to the shelter...IDK these things are REALLY difficult (logistically, not just socially/emotionally) to deal with in an ad-hoc way, which is why there really needs to be better and more easily accessible systems for economic services and shit... :(

I apparently "Look like a rapist" (not a specific person who commits rapes, but I have been removed from public a public eevent this year because, and I quote "You're probably a really nice guy, but they way you look is making people feel unsafe" and apparently my personal style is "Rapist Chic") so you could not pay me to approach a crying woman.

I'd go into a local place of business, find a woman, and ask her if she could help. Then I'd dick off. When you are a sexually threatening pesron the kindest thing you can do is keep out of peoples way

You're probably a really nice guy, but they way you look is making people feel unsafe

I'm sorry for laughing, but seriously what? Were you at a gathering for rape victims or at a beauty pageant for 5-year old kids, because I can't picture this happening at any public event?

Is it possible how you... carry yourself might be misleading, and what people are referring to?

In my small hometown? Might see if they need me to call someone for help. I wouldn't give money or hand them my phone, though. (I do donate to the local homeless shelter semi-regularly, which is much more helpful than handing homeless people cash)

In London? nothing because honestly most of them are scam artists.

Re: So this happened

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I would've remembered no one even lifts a finger to help me when I'm the one needing help and just let her be, remembering that if I don't get empathy from others I might as well keep some of mine for myself.

I wouldn't have done anything, because I'd be too afraid to get robbed tbh. Plus, everyone is saying call/direct them to a homeless shelter but the shelters here keep saying they go around and most homeless people refuse.

Re: So this happened

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - Well, this was a very public area (there were other people around), and she was on the ground. So I felt safe. Maybe that was naive, but she really didn't look like a threat. (I wouldn't have, say, let her in my car or anything though.)

Honestly, I would have asked one of the employees to check up on her, because in my experience young people acting like that are usually just drunk or on drugs, and thus pretty unpredictable.

Re: So this happened

(Anonymous) 2015-11-11 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT - True. She wasn't really acting irrational or anything, just... sad? Confused? She was hugging her knees to her chest. But that could be where the "unpredictable" comes in.

Give her money or a meal and search up the nearest help shelter if she's newly homeless or seems confused.

I would find out if there was a soup kitchen or shelter that could help her. I honestly don't know how to contact such places though. This might seem stupid but I would call my mom because she knows how to get ahold of all those kinds of resources.

The thing that also Homeless!Anon seems to forget is: you never know. I think checking on someone is fine and if you're not sure what's going on, getting someone who might be more versed in what actions to take is fine as well.

A friend once had a similar situation and it turned out the girl was stranded in the city for a few days without a place to stay because her friends had ditched her. She offered her to sleep at her place and helped her out a lot through that.

Other times you might just be annoying someone trying to mind their own business.
