I don't care about coffee but I agree in the sense that I would like to see some more AUs that are actually AUs, and not excuses to have the characters being cute in some particularly favored aesthetic.

I mean nothing wrong with that, I just also like AUs that are AUs.

This. I'm also not a big coffee fan but if something is an AU, I like for the fic to actually reflect that on more than just a superficial level. Otherwise why bother?

I laughed when I read this because one of my favorite characters in Last Exile could do that and stay completely in character.

I've never actually even read coffee shop AUs, but I kinda want to write one now just for that.

Ah ha ha. And i only read coffe-shop AU's for the fandoms i love because i want Moar Fic. I don't like coffee, never drink it, and find the 'can't function until coffee' trope to be stupid and boring (especially when the characters in question have never even *drunk* coffee in a single episode. ARRGH.).

I prefer...bakery AU!! Or bookshop owner AU, or, just...random working-class person AU.

Seriously, I hate this trope. It's meant to be cute, but it's just annoying instead. This is not even how coffee works. Sure, it will give you a short-term boost, but unless you consume literally litres of it, it won't energize you for long, much less for the whole day. Tea is actually a better energizer, and I've never seen tea-drinkers behave like tea is their life-saving fuel.

You're ignoring people who have caffeine withdrawal if they don't drink their morning coffee and the fact that caffeine affects people differently.

Now I wish someone would write a teashop AU which waxes lyrical about tea leaves and all sorts of herbal teas. I'd even offer a link to the T2 website for herbal tea ideas.

See, I like coffee, I don't go a day without it, but I don't find coffee that interesting. On some level I get you just because if you're going to have an AU set in a specific job like that then it might as well discuss the subject, but coffee AU's typically seem to be an excuse to put the characters in a relatively normal, modern, lighthearted setting (it's an easy setup for characters meeting, too); they're more fluff than anything else. (I'm not necessarily saying this is a bad thing, mind; sometimes I like fluff too!)

For me, I don't think this would make them anymore exciting, lol.

Coffee-AU is my fave types of AU, one of them to be preсise.

Honestly the amount of coffee addicted characters unable to function without gallons of coffee is bordering on ridiculous. This trait doesn't add anything to the characterization for me as it become too generic. I don't mind coffee addiction in fic but I don't find it interesting either.

So I can do with less coffee in my coffee AUs. (And pastries descriptions. Death Note with all the sweets is terrible for diet, it's evil.) Give me a coffee AU with chai tea in it and overpriced everything so that only True Love can keep someone coming there.

I would definitely read more coffee shop AUs if they were full of purple prose about coffee and breakfast pastries. I always wonder what the point of setting your fic in a coffee shop is if you're never going to actually talk about anything except generic fluff interspersed the occasional pumpkin spice latte joke.

I just got sick of them being completely out of character. I'm hating AUs less in my current fandom because a lot of them seem to actually be in character. I developed my hate for them in the Supernatural fandom where I never saw a single one where anyone was remotely recognizable or in-character.

I got sick of them in The Hobbit because it was flooded with OOC fics that I felt had no connection at all to LotR except for character names. Reincarnation fics were only slightly better.

honest to god, one time I wrote a five things set with different AUs for Night Vale, and the one I liked the most was the coffee AU, because I spent 90% of the time figuring out a) what would Cecil order at a Starbucks, and b) how could you approximate a Cyanide Spice Latte outside of Night Vale, anyway? The coffee bit was what made it actually interesting, so I have no goddamn clue why generic coffeshop AU is a thing.
