Ah ha ha. And i only read coffe-shop AU's for the fandoms i love because i want Moar Fic. I don't like coffee, never drink it, and find the 'can't function until coffee' trope to be stupid and boring (especially when the characters in question have never even *drunk* coffee in a single episode. ARRGH.).

I prefer...bakery AU!! Or bookshop owner AU, or, just...random working-class person AU.

Seriously, I hate this trope. It's meant to be cute, but it's just annoying instead. This is not even how coffee works. Sure, it will give you a short-term boost, but unless you consume literally litres of it, it won't energize you for long, much less for the whole day. Tea is actually a better energizer, and I've never seen tea-drinkers behave like tea is their life-saving fuel.

I just *despise* the 'staggering around, monosyllabic, half-asleep' thing. Huh? I literally know *no one* like that in my life - never have. It's just...ridiculous.

::raises hand:: That would be me. Glad to know you.

Well, that's a huge bummer for you, then, I imagine.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-11-15 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
haha, I actually know someone like that. I don't care for the trope though.

I just...have never met one single person in my entire life who is like that. It just seems way too exaggerated and played for 'cute', and since I don't find it cute at all....

Meh.

She's like a zombie until she arrives at her office and has a cup of coffee there. So functioning - even driving a car - but on auto pilot.

I find that weird and kind of dangerous. Yeesh.

You're ignoring people who have caffeine withdrawal if they don't drink their morning coffee and the fact that caffeine affects people differently.

But it sure is a lot easier to just say, "that's not a thing because I personally haven't seen it," isn't it?
sidewinder: (rawr!)

[personal profile] sidewinder 2015-11-16 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, I'm one of those people. Physically addicted to coffee, if I don't have it in the morning a migraine is sure to follow, and I have a hard time waking up without it.

But hey, apparently I only exist in AU fanfic (an AU trope I don't even care for myself.) What a surprise.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be more likely to read bakery AU because baked goods interest me waaaaaaay more than coffee!

Yes! Though 'i make extra-special cutesy-wootsey cupcakes' is getting old. C'mon, people - we need more decadent *bread*!!

I approve of this idea. There are so many awesome kinds of bread you can make. Sweet bread with raisins, cheese, and poppy seeds, for example 8_8

Heee!
I love a bread that my brother buys from time to time, 'granola bread' - it has nuts and seeds in it, it's practically a meal all on its own. Omg, I love it....

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
A long time ago, there was a bakery in the Amtrak station at Baltimore that sold cheese bread. It was a rich eggy bread and always had a layer of melty cheese just under the crust. I have never tasted anything like it anywhere else.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I have a feeling that comes about because people write bakery AU without actually knowing much about baking (much like coffeeshop AU) so cutesy cupcakes is about the extent of their knowledge. I mean a proper bakery... cakes, cookies, pastries, bread, the works!

[personal profile] tabaqui 2015-11-15 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! And being up at gods-awful hour a.m. to make dough and set it to rise and humping huge bags of flour up and down narrow stairs (I love the set up in 'Moonstruck', where the ovens are wood-fired, down around the back of the bakery, in the *basement*, practically medieval. You *know* its a bitch to get all the supplies they need down there.....)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-16 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
have you tried any bakery themed mystery novels?

I was trying to find one that I read to recommend "Brownies & Broomsticks" and ended up with an entire list...

This I guess is a huge thing. I didn't know that... wow.

Heeeeee! I had no clue things like that existed. I read Dick Francis mysteries and haven't really ever tried anything else.

Interesting! Thanks for the link. :)

This is actually something I loved about Robin McKinley's vampire novel 'Sunshine'...the FMC is a baker and there's a lot of talk about it. Some readers complained ("So boring! I don't need all this detail about your muffins!") but I loved the shit out of it.

And it was character topical, too...like, she's a baker, she has the feed-people gene, so there's an element of "...vampire friend doesn't eat??? but must provide baked goods for friends?? what do??"

(Anonymous) 2015-11-16 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
I love baking but to be perfectly honest, that book contained too much of it. It wouldn't have been so bad if the character was at least talking about a variety of baked goods but no, it was always cinnamon rolls. Cinnamon roll this, cinnamon roll that... it got in the way of the story and it was glaringly obvious that this was the author's personal obsession. McKinley has a thing about this, her book reflects her latest interests and she goes overboard with it.

BANANA BREAD! It's a midpoint between bread and cake!

I *luff* banana bread! No nuts, though - leave the nuts out. :)

Now I wish someone would write a teashop AU which waxes lyrical about tea leaves and all sorts of herbal teas. I'd even offer a link to the T2 website for herbal tea ideas.
