No comment on your secret, but mad love for using Ashura there. I'm always stupendously happy to see some RG Veda love.

who knew that people would choose/reject GRAPHIC novels based on the GRAPHICS. How is it ridiculous to do that?

Yeah, I feel you. Obviously not all western comics and all, but the prevalent style for the major publishers is unappealing to me. Straddles the line between realism and caricature too awkwardly for me.

I have a little more luck with indie stuff, but a fair bit of that is too stiff feeling for me.

Not sure what kind of comics you're looking for but you might like Inaki Miranda, who did a storyline in Vertigo's Fairest, with writer Lauren Beukes, and also the series Coffin Hill (though the latter is more horror than fantasy.) Also if you can find the Madame Xanadu series with art by Amy Reeder.

Same here tbh. I mean, I don't expect all graphic novels to look like a pretty shoujo romance but a HUGE aspect of graphic novels is the GRAPHICS and many of them just don't seem to care about being even slightly nice to look at. Admittedly another big part of MY reasoning for avoiding most western GN is their single-minded focus on being Grim And Gritty And Nihilistic And Nothing Else Ever Because ARTTTTT. Can we just have a few GN that are nice to look at and don't make me want to go to bed forever/kill all the characters because they're unredeemable dicks?

I'm sorry that Frank Miller comic upset you that one time but you're utterly, utterly wrong.

I suggest you start asking for recs for what you want instead of being such a fucking weeb.

Jay Anacleto did some pretty nice work on Aria. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aria_(comics)

But it's really hard to find Western artists who do the sort of thing you're talking about.

Seriously? I think so many graphic novels have far more beautiful art than your average manga.

With you, OP. There's just something about beautiful shoujo art that I just love, it's so stylized and elegant.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm...Esteban Maroto was pretty stylish, back in the day. There are other artists in that 1970s romance/horror vein that could be pretty cool.

I don't know what's collected.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
You want to read Saga, man! And maybe Monstress? It's new but it looks sooooo pretty. And Ody-C could be a thing if you don't find it overly harsh. Talk nerdy to me. What are you after?

Can I interest you in a fairytale-inspired fantasy comic series with a somewhat manga-esque art style?

http://www.goodreads.com/series/72417-thieves-kings

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I get that. There are a few series that have been highly reccommended by people I trust for the story, but the art just drives me off. Not because it is bad, but it is so busy I have a hard time focusing long.

For fantasy, you might like work by Emily Carroll or Shaun Tan.

For non-fantasy, Anya's Ghost, Severed, and Blacksad were some of my gateway book into appreciating graphic novels more.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I miss all the pretty shoujo manga. There are so few of them nowadays.

:(

The most beautiful western comics artists whose work I'm familiar with are P. Craig Russell and Michael Zuli. Very different styles, but both extraordinarily beautiful.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 04:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I find this secret really funny, because I personally find most Shojo Manga art style repulsive and anything but pretty. As they say, to each their own!

I hope you'll find something that will suit your tastes, OP! And maybe over time get accustomed to more western art styles, there's a lot of good stuff to read out there : D so, good luck!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-18 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Just stick to manga. Fans of US American comics tend to be even more obnoxious and full of themselves than manga fans. Because I'm guessing you're trying to get into US American comics?
