Boycotting dead writers.

What are your thoughts? On the one hand historically monstrous attitudes of earlier generations should not ever be promoted, encouraged or, skyfairy forbid, revived, but on the other hand, the fucker is dead? How much support are you really giving them? and what real benefit can their ideas gain from your support?

I'm with the latter argument. So long as money isn't going to people who still hold those views, there's no point in boycotting, except that self righteous feeling that you're Fighting the Good Fight (TM) without actually doing anything.

I think that, if they aren't getting any benefit from you reading their work, then it depends on what KIND of books they wrote.

Type 1: Their badness is inextricably linked to the book and you can't read it without being encouraged by the book to start thinking/acting in the bad way. Yeah, probably don't read that just for kicks and giggles. However, completely forgetting what was said and done in the past that was bad is a good way to let those things start creeping back in, because people won't recognize the warning signs, so it's a good idea to keep track of those ideas and be aware of how they present themselves. This is why it's important to have, say, Mein Kampf still available, because it's valuable to know how people think when they have gone off in a bad way.

Type 2: Author was a terrible person, but their books don't really reflect or promote the bad things they represented, or at least not to a particularly high degree. In this case, I'd probably hinge my decision to boycott or not on who is benefiting from my patronage of said books. Example: Marion Zimmer Bradley was an awful, awful person, but she doesn't get any benefit from you buying new printing of her books now that she's dead, and her books, while containing some questionable material, don't really reflect the terrible person she was---heck I was FLABBERGASTED to learn about her behavior, because her books gave no clue that she fucking acted like her (clearly portrayed as The Bad Guys) villains all the damn time. Reading books by a bad person, now dead, which don't encourage you to be a bad person or depict bad things in a positive light is not helping the bad person nor hurting you.

It depends on the reader. Lovecraft's mythos has moved beyond his original estate and now I just pick and choose who to read. He was a racist during his career, this is an unmovable aspect of his work and colors it distinctly.

As for Marion Zimmer Bradley, while I distinctly understand anyone who simply chooses not to read her stuff for fear of some really awful implications to be found in her work (Darkover gets kind of weird in hindsight now), that's fine. Money from works started in her name and at least one e-book vendor has vowed to give profits to charities against what she did and condoned.

Erasing their work from the shelves of history isn't necessary. Neither is glossing over what they've done or said; in fact a clear and critical eye is often necessary to piece together from a scholastic what worked best in what they made and why and how the landscape of fiction has changed since their views made it onto the shelf.

People write problematic stuff all the time. We learn from them, we move on. There's no point in being afraid of a dead asshole's voice.

As someone who got into Lovecraft in my early 20s I'm very, very aware of his xenophobia. It's honestly worse in his earlier writings, which is irritating because his early stories are otherwise superior to his later work.

I don't really read his stories anymore mostly because I've read many of them several times -- The Colour Out of Space is a personal favorite -- but also partly because of the undercurrent of racism and sexism that's shot throughout his work. But I wouldn't boycott the man or tell others not to read him (though I'd give them warnings as to what to expect) largely because I feel that while he wasn't a particularly good writer, he was an important one, and the ideas that he presented, as well as the mythos he created, have moved beyond their roots and become very much a part of the cultural fabric, particularly once he was rediscovered in the 60s. Lovecraftian concepts color everything from Amnesia to Alien, and there are certain tropes that are very, very common in sci-fi nowadays that have roots in Lovecraft.

I also don't believe in refusing to enjoy things that are problematic, because then you might as well watch the linoleum curl for entertainment. The trick is to go in knowing what's problematic about it or being able to spot problematic elements and being able to enjoy a work anyway. Though of course sometimes it's difficult to do that when the work is clearly colored by unpleasant views or ideas, so unless you're a pure film buff, there's no reason to watch, for example, Birth of a Nation unless you have an interest in seeing its pioneering camera work and artistic techniques.

Like, I follow someone because I adore their art, but the general tone and crap from their posts not related to art really annoy me, so is there a way I can just see their art on my dashboard and NOT their main posts? Or am I just gonna have to use xkit and just block all posts not related to their art?

Okay. I am finally going to give this a go.

....How does this even work? I feel like it's a lot more strict and takes itself a lot more seriously than Dreamwidth RP; like all of the non-fun players (who were usually quite excellent at writing for their characters, I'll give them that) went from LJ to Tumblr lol

But honestly, I can see past all that. I'm willing to push hard with my writing. It'll all be just for fun, but writing is so important to me. I feel like I've lost a lot of it, and I need to incorporate writing into what I'd consider a well-balanced life. Also, to be honest, I miss e-meeting people through RP.

Any Tumblr RPers in the house? The games and the way that players interact with one another is confusing. I see people are using icons now? Everything's changing, help D:
