Sense8

I just watched it on Netflix and am hooked. I could have done without the BPO plot and just watched the sensates living their lives and helping each other out.

The fandom seems to be pretty small though, at least going by the numbers of fic on AO3. I'm surprised; I would have thought that a show which features canon gay and lesbian couples, a trans-woman and people of different nationalities and races would be more popular. Isn't the main cast basically tumblr's wet dream?

How far are you in? I watched the whole thing a while ago now and I really enjoyed it, some stuff I found a bit eh but overall I liked it and really want to see where it goes since I think they got a second season?

I love the whole cast and I'm not sure who my fave character is but I do really love Kala, Capheus and Riley(also Nomi is great and her and Neets are adorable and Lito is a fantastic melodramatic baby).

I know from my own perspective I would not have the first clue on how to write the whole sense8 thing at all, it's like telepathy ramped up to 11 and then some. Plus I'm just not finding myself craving fic, I think because the show gives me everything I want with the couples I like so I don't feel the need to explore it in fanon? (Though I've thought about seeing if any Sun/Capheus exists before now, but then I end up forgetting).

The fandom seems to mostly be gifsets and occasional rambling posts than fic, but I haven't checked back in a while so idk at how much quieter it's gotten.

Sense8 spoilers

I finished season 1. As I said, I'm not a big fan of the BPO stuff, though the way the cluster worked together to save Riley was utterly fantastic. I'm so glad everyone got a moment to shine! What is the stuff that you found eh? I have to admit I don't care all that much for Capheus scenes at home; I utterly adore him in scenes with the other sensates (he's so adorably optimistic and happy!) but I felt it dragged when the show focused on his live. But then without those scenes we wouldn't have gotten all these great Sun moments, so. I hope that maybe we'll see more Capheus/Kala bonding in the next season; given all the meds his mother has to take maybe Kala could help them with her pharmaceutical knowledge.

I found Riley's backstory also sort of meh, to be honest. It felt a bit forced to me. I do like her and her relationship with Riley, though.

I just want more of the stuff we see in the show as fic: the cluster living their lives seperately but being connected to and supportive of one another, helping each other out even if it's just in small ways. And of course outsider POV fic on the sensates, because I'm a sucker for outsider POV fics.

I think I've seen some Sun/Capheus fics on AO3! I haven't read them (I see them more in a protective ass-kicking big sister/little brother sort of way), but I've seen a small handful.

I'm not sure about the main plot either, but I didn't hate it. We'll see how it goes. (Thankfully the show did get a season two.)

The best parts for me were watching the sensates supporting each other in their daily lives to. (I LOVED Sun fighting 'for' Capheus, and the museum convo with Nomi and Lito, and half the cast helping Nomi escape, and Wolfgang and Lito's scenes, and all the really cute scenes between Capheus and Sun and Capheus and Riley. There were some heartwarming character moments in this series.)

That and I genuinely liked every couple, so that was different. (Nomi/Neets and Lito/Hernando were my favorites, but everyone was cute and had chemistry.)

Isn't the main cast basically tumblr's wet dream?

It is, but for some reason it didn't take off. Don't ask me why; the first season was solid.

YES to all of this. Something about them being all supportive of each other just hits all my buttons. Also that scene where Will warns Wolfgang about the bullet hitting Kevlar? Like, Will had his own worries what with trying to rescue Riley and as a cop he can't have liked Wolfgang killing his family, but he still helped. And then when Whisper tried to force Will's hand by directing the helicopter into the path of the ambulance and Wolfgang took over for him because Wolfgang has no problem killing if it protects the people he cares about. (That part where they all helped together to rescue Riley was amazing. Sun's nonchalant "Only four?" was perfect. And Kala got to be kick-ass and use her knowledge to help again! <3)

All the couples are very cute. I'm glad Lito and Hernando got back together (and got Dani back, too!), but I'm even more glad that Nomi/Neets never even wavered. I really appreciate how Neets is completely supportive of Nomi, even though the federal government literally stood at her mother's porch. I really hope they'll make it through to the end of the show (as well as all the other couples, of course. Hernando still needs to find out that his boyfriend is now eight people!).

I'm so glad it got a second season, though I imagine it's going to take a while before it airs. According to wikipedia it only got green-lighted in August and given how many different locations they have to go to to shoot production must take a pretty long time. (Can I just say I love the cinematography of the show? The way their visits are shot, especially when one sensate takes over the body of another, but also the scenery and establishing shots of the locations.)

Rereading Fellowship right now, and considering what to write for a Big Bang. I just analyzed the shit out of the new Hobbit movies too.

Oooo, Do you have a link to the Big Bang. I follow the Hobbit one, I think, but I didn't know there were any others.

I'm rereading the Silm now, and I"m probably going to reread LOTR after.

Re: Tolkien

The Hobbit one is the only one I know. They tried a Tolkien one but the mod disappeared. I'd love for another one of those, as there are a lot of non-Hobbit Big Bang ideas I'd love to try. If I knew how to get artists, I'd consider running one.

I actually think there was a gen LOTR BB at one point, though it could be just any gen stuff. The Silmarillion Writers Guild would run that if it existed.

Ghost ( aka Ghost B.C).

I used to dislike the look of Papa Emeritus III, but it has grown on me and I really like the costume he wore during the acoustic tour.

"Meliora" is one fantastic album and it's only one song on there that I don't like so much.
I also like how they're less "on the nose" about Satan in the lyrical content. Makes it easier to play in mixed company.

Then there's the question of whether it's worth it to buy tickets to Tuska Open Air (Finland) for just this one band. I don't listen to anything else in that line-up.

Any other Ghost fans here?

Doctor Who (Ten's Run) [spoilers]

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2015-11-29 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I recently rewatched the last 10 or so episodes with my sister (her first time viewing). So, I just want to talk about how amazing Donna is and how sad her story ended.

Also, my sister really disliked Rose and was really annoyed that her scene was the last companion scene when the Doctor was saying goodbye (I am not a huge fan of her either so...).

Donna was amazing. I hate what they did to her character. I would love to see her again, but I can't imagine she'd have many favorable things to say if she did somehow remember safely.

I actually liked first season Rose; not so much second season Rose, though. She worked better with Eccleston as being a Companion than a potential love interest. And they spent so much of Martha's season with the Doctor pining and Martha pining, so in a way it screwed over Martha's character as well.

This to all of your comment.

Eccleston was a great Doctor and I wish he'd stayed on longer anyway, but especially with regards to Rose's change from simple Companion to Love Interest with Ten. I thought that had been weird even when I first watched DW and actually shipped Rose and the Doctor. And it really screwed over Martha; I adore her as Companion but can't really re-watch most of her episodes because Ten's moping gets on my nerves.

Yeah, that is one of the reasons I love Donna. She wasn't in love or pining over the Doctor.

This is how I feel about Rose too. I loved her with 9. Then they started pushing the romance angle hard and she started really not working for me with 10. Then she left and yet everything was still about her. And she screwed over Martha's storyline and parts of Donna's too.

I feel as though that's one of those scenes where you really feel RTD's bias. I like his run on DW more than Moffat's, but his favouritism towards Rose really got in the way sometimes. :/

Yeah, I get they have an epic romance but it doesn't not have to be front and center when she is in any way involved.

I just rewatched the Agatha Christie episode and god, Catherine Tate and David Tennant's chemistry was so amazing. I want them to work together again and for me to not feel sad about it at the end.

As to the Rose being in Ten's last episode, I liked it. I saw on tumblr once something about how Ten was born looking at Rose Tyler so it made sense that he died wanting to see her too. And from a practical standpoint there was some suspense over how they would work her in, so having her be last was like a big reveal.

Also, I am such a sucker for things like that, so I would have loved it no matter what. WOOHOO, NARRATIVE BOOKENDS!

I guess I just couldn't stand how thirsty she was after the Doctor. Like...she was the Bella of Doctor Who.

yass! I love Donna sfm, partly because I kick it OldWho and find the 'best bros' dynamic much more natural and watchable than "TROO LUV DEEP ANGST BURNIN UP STARS 2 SAY BYE" RTD rot. Him and Rose were horrifyingly feedback loop-y in their dysfunction, so Donna always being like "HAHA no" when he gets crazy but also supporting him was my JAM.

Her ending is SO sad. Exactly the way Jamie and Zoe's end was tragic! TPTB are fuckers. (Where are all my fics of Tiny Tardis Team and Donna gettin they memories back and going off to kick time lord ass and save the universe??)

Donna is my favorite Who companion. 10 is my least favorite Doctor, but he worked best with Donna. Their chemistry was perfect. She called him out when he went too far. She was just really amazing.

That is actually one of the things that made me like Clara once she was with 12. They had that same sort of dynamic where she didn't let him get away with things.

Re: Doctor Who (Ten's Run) [spoilers]

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
I started liking Clara for the same reason. She and Twelve have a fun dynamic and I like seeing her call him out on stuff.

Donna's end with the mind wipe and the Doctor watching her from afar at her wedding made me cry some really ugly tears. Like, full blown sobbing with snot and tears. I loved Donna. She's my favorite companion and her and Ten were so damn fun together. I really liked Martha as well and thought she was so cool in the last few episodes of her run. I would've loved to see her join Torchwood permanently. I liked Rose with Nine, but not with Ten, and I hated how she got a relatively happy ending compared to the rest of Ten's companions.
