Re: Annoying names in fiction

This annoys me so much! Most frequently when reading Dragon Age fanfic though, as some people chose the most ridiculous names for their player characters. It is especially annoying with Hawke as we know the names of most of their family, and I find it hard to believe that Leandra and Malcolm (normal names!) would call their firstborn Dajdejfhs and then give the next kids the (semi-)normal names of Bethany and Carver. It would make sense then though why Hawke goes by his/her surname.

Hahaha, I get where you're coming from, but in my case it isn't just Hawke. Anytime I read BioWare fic there's a moment of, "What's the protagonists name again? That's weird."

The name can be great and I'll still have a hard time getting used to it because it isn't mine. BioWare games are such personalized experiences that I guess it's just hard to disconnect.

Though IA that some names just don't go together. I wish I had researched the surnames of the Inquisitors before I decided on names, but I didn't (I searched names ahead of time, found some I liked); some of them aren't the best match but I'm okay with them now regardless.)

I'm weirdly picky about what people name their characters in fic, but I'm also totally that person who names their characters the most ridiculous things I can think of in-game. So I guess I don't actually have much room to judge!

I mean, I have an Inquisitor named Hot Pocket, a Hawke named Giraffe and a Shepard named Deathray. But if I ever wrote fic, I think I'd just stick to the defaults, hahaha.

Hahaha, you having an Inquisitor named Hot Pocket! That's hilarious. (As is Deathray.) I love the thought of playing through such an epically scaled game with a silly name, but I've never done it. I always try to come up with something that I like that feels a bit unusual but not outrageous. Not sure how well I do. (I've used Hadwin, Namir, Othain, Ellyn, Naladrie, Solveig and Rylee. That's just a couple.)

I don't write though, and if I did I'm not sure what I would do. The canon names can be boring sometimes, but that doesn't stop the confusion when I see something different.

Your names are pretty cool, actually! They're unique, but still suit the canon world really well, if that makes sense?

I got into the habit of silly names as a kid with Pokemon and ... never really stopped, haha. It helps that their names are never actually spoken out loud, since I don't think I'd be able to take anything seriously if they were.

And for that same reason, I've never been able to complete a playthrough with a deliberately hilarious/ridiculous-looking character, haha (like, with all of the sliders as extreme as they'll go).

That's what I try for! I wouldn't name one of my Dragon Age protagonists 'Ashley' or 'John', lol.

Ooo, you should play Fallout 4. Fallout 4 does have a character that will read your player name, and they've recorded some pretty ridiculous ones. (Fuckface, for instance.) I wonder if that would work for you! (If nothing else, it would be entertaining.)

Oh god, I couldn't either. I don't even attempt to make hilarious looking characters, I want all my protagonists to look like cuties or super models.

It's that sort of reaction that has been partly responsible for me being fond of fics where they just called him Garret and her Marian.

In fact, barring Elenaria herself, Kélan [Brosca], and Emilia Amell, my Firestar headcanon has all the origins having their default names. Hell, even Emilia's two siblings are Solona and Daylen, and Elenaria' first Bearer was Neria.

I don't know why, but I like the canon names in Origins more than the ones in DA2 and DAI. I used several of the canon names in Origins, but I changed the majority in the other two games.

When I hear the name 'Marian' I think of Robin Hood so that one doesn't work for me, but it isn't a bad name in itself. (Anyway, I don't read female!Hawke fic because tbh I didn't like the voice actress and I could never finish a game because of that.)

'Garret' I kind of like, just...not as much as something else, but I absolutely see why people use it; it's more fitting than certain names.

I don't read any fic where Hawke or the HoF use a custom name. It's too confusing and I've run into too many perfect princess Couslands/Lavellans and too many grimdarkedgy custom male protags.

For me, if a fic has a custom name that is RL "Normal" but not really "trendy", it works okay for me. Elves can be a bit less RL, because of the track record in the games for Elvhen names, but not too ridiculous in crëatyv spelling.

But I still like fics that use the default names better, especially for Hawke.
