Re: Annoying names in fiction
Hahaha, I get where you're coming from, but in my case it isn't just Hawke. Anytime I read BioWare fic there's a moment of, "What's the protagonists name again? That's weird."
The name can be great and I'll still have a hard time getting used to it because it isn't mine. BioWare games are such personalized experiences that I guess it's just hard to disconnect.
Though IA that some names just don't go together. I wish I had researched the surnames of the Inquisitors before I decided on names, but I didn't (I searched names ahead of time, found some I liked); some of them aren't the best match but I'm okay with them now regardless.)
Re: Annoying names in fiction
(Anonymous) 2015-12-03 03:00 am (UTC)(link)I mean, I have an Inquisitor named Hot Pocket, a Hawke named Giraffe and a Shepard named Deathray. But if I ever wrote fic, I think I'd just stick to the defaults, hahaha.
Re: Annoying names in fiction
I don't write though, and if I did I'm not sure what I would do. The canon names can be boring sometimes, but that doesn't stop the confusion when I see something different.
Re: Annoying names in fiction
(Anonymous) 2015-12-03 04:11 am (UTC)(link)I got into the habit of silly names as a kid with Pokemon and ... never really stopped, haha. It helps that their names are never actually spoken out loud, since I don't think I'd be able to take anything seriously if they were.
And for that same reason, I've never been able to complete a playthrough with a deliberately hilarious/ridiculous-looking character, haha (like, with all of the sliders as extreme as they'll go).
Re: Annoying names in fiction
That's what I try for! I wouldn't name one of my Dragon Age protagonists 'Ashley' or 'John', lol.

Ooo, you should play Fallout 4. Fallout 4 does have a character that will read your player name, and they've recorded some pretty ridiculous ones. (Fuckface, for instance.) I wonder if that would work for you! (If nothing else, it would be entertaining.)
Oh god, I couldn't either. I don't even attempt to make hilarious looking characters, I want all my protagonists to look like cuties or super models.
Re: Annoying names in fiction
In fact, barring Elenaria herself, Kélan [Brosca], and Emilia Amell, my Firestar headcanon has all the origins having their default names. Hell, even Emilia's two siblings are Solona and Daylen, and Elenaria' first Bearer was Neria.
Re: Annoying names in fiction
When I hear the name 'Marian' I think of Robin Hood so that one doesn't work for me, but it isn't a bad name in itself. (Anyway, I don't read female!Hawke fic because tbh I didn't like the voice actress and I could never finish a game because of that.)
'Garret' I kind of like, just...not as much as something else, but I absolutely see why people use it; it's more fitting than certain names.
