Re: controversial/confrontational/hostile/bitter opinions

I hate that "asexual" has become a thing.

It used to be that I was a straight person that just didn't really care about sex, now suddenly I'm considered a weird, defective loser who everyone makes fun of.

People only really make fun of you if you go around saying you're Ace, or demisexual heteroromantic ace. Don't do that.

I definitely don't do that. I don't use any of those words, I just meant it seems like there's a ton of people online making fun of asexuals in general. I actually don't tell anyone because I feel like it's pretty much irrelevant to anyone outside of potential romantic partners. And I don't even like having to think of myself as asexual at all, honestly. I miss being able to consider myself straight but I don't feel like I can do that anymore.

I don't really understand what's keeping you from identifying as straight, if that's how you consider yourself. Sexualities aren't about having sex at all times. Straight people and gay people can refrain from having sex without having to label themselves as asexual. And if someone's coming along and saying "No, you're asexual", then fuck 'em (figuratively) because they're a dumbass. Don't let the dumbasses win. :(

That's how I see it, but I've unfortunately had conversations (online) with people who claim that it's basically all about sex and you can't call yourself straight (or gay) if you're not into sex.

AYRT

Well, much like how you, a straight person, don't have the power to tell an asexual person that they're really just straight or gay, they also can't tell you that you're asexual. That's for you to decide, and while "straight" gets a bad rap, there's nothing wrong with it, so feel free to stand up for yourself.

Also, not talking to those people, as the other anon suggested, is a very good piece of advice. It might save you a lot of grief. People who can't accept what you are aren't worth your time.
