Inspired by #4

What have you shipped in canon, but not adaptations due to how they're presented? Or vice versa?

Re: Inspired by #4

I sort of shipped Harry/Hermione in the films. The films were kind of weird with that, they hinted both, but movie Ron was a complete moron after the first one, and Hermione was a lot sweeter. Meanwhile, Harry and Ginny's movie relationship had zero buildup. So Harry/Hermione made more sense in the films, even though as far as canon went I was a HUGE Ron/Hermione shipper.

(Well, maybe not that huge, huge R/Hr shippers tended to get... ship warish and I wasn't. But I definitely wasn't H/Hr.)

I was thinking about this one, too

Yeah, in HBP especially.

Interesting. I shipped Harry/Hermione since book 1 (though I actually now more ship Harry/Ron/Hermione than anything else). I liked the idea of Harry/Ginny but hated the way it played out. And I hated Ron/Hermione. Just not ever going to be my cup of tea. I don't like that type of bickering relationship. Ron and Hermione only ever work for me when harry is there too.

But in the movies I didn't really ship Harry with anyone? Like, I think Dan and Emma had some chemistry and Emma and Rupert had none (and Dan and Ginny's actress also had one). But I didn't really feel like they had enough chemistry for me to ship and I didn't think the way the relationship was written on screen led to the same shippy feelings I got in the books (except in DH part 2). And on rewatches the movies haven't held up as well in general. I don't think they are as good adaptions as I used to think.

About the films not holding up well, I've come to that realization recently as well. I still enjoy the books for the most part when I read them, but I find myself not really liking to watch the films very much anymore. Funnily enough, I quite like the first two films now, especially CoS, because when the films were first released I didn't like them as much as PoA and HBP. But now, I just feel like the more the series went on the more I just nitpick how rushed the films felt. I also felt like the films tended to be really self serving, especially in the latter films.

I agree about the first two. They've grown on me more. I still love some of the bits (McGonagall is spot on, for example). But some things really ruin it for me (Voldemort's portrayal is so wrong).

I agree with this. I liked the relationship between Ron and Hermione in the books, and I found the relationship between Harry and Ginny simple but cute and pretty believable, but the movies really didn't do it for me.

I shipped Bilbo/Thorin in the Hobbit movies, while never even considering it in the book.

Me too.

I ship Bilbo/Thorin in the movie version, the book really doesn't spend time on any kind of relationship.

I remember being flabbergasted when I saw the first movie. Wondering if I had finally lost it and my slash goggles were now permanently glued to my face. I'm still so relieved I wasn't the only one who saw it.

Haha, maybe I'm one of the only people who shipped it in the books, then. Not hard though, my feelings about film Bilbo/Thorin are a hundred times stronger.

It's a couple of things, I guess; Richard Armitage has chemistry with almost everyone, and the writing made their relationship seem much more important. (As did the lovely acting between Richard and Martin.)

DA. I'm actually pretty sure the writers and actors all knew what they were doing there. XD

If they didn't I'll eat a hat. (I don't have one, someone give me one and I'll eat it.)

Especially in the acorn scene...

Ain't no way I'm believing someone sat down to write that and didn't find it at least a bit romantic. (That and Thorin's death scene was so not a death scene between two friends; it played out more like 'almost lovers'.)

NA - yes, that acorn scene was... something.

I think that one of the few changes that worked in the Hobbit movies was the expansion of their friendship. It made the end so much more painful. And it did make me ship.

Re: Inspired by #4

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-12-05 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Most the other changes were pretty bad, but their friendship was one of the very best things about the films for me. While I always found the ending sad, it was nowhere near as heart-wrenching as the films ending; that relationship added another layer of tragedy to it because you kind of felt like there was something unfinished between them. (Or at least I did, especially with how relieved Thorin was that Bilbo forgave him. They were both so affectionate and loving as well...something that just wasn't as present in the book. In the EE Richard makes a comment about 'things left unsaid' and that just made it worse.)

I ship Superman/Lois in the comics, cartoon, and original films, but not so much in Man of Steel. I think Amy Adams was miscast. She doesn't seem believable as Lois to me, and there's no chemistry between her and Henry Cavill.

On a similar note, I like Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman as an OT3 in the Justice League cartoon, but can only see the three of them as close friends in the comics. It bugs me whenever comic writers hook up Diana with one of the dudes. The one exception to this is the Kingdom Come mini-series, because A) it's an AU and doesn't affect the "main" DCU, and B) the ending lends itself well to the Bat/Supes/Wondy OT3 interpretation.

I feel that way about all the Superman movies. None of the Loises were well cast. I ship Clark/Lois in the comics, in Lois and Clark, and in Smallville.

I still ship Lois/Clark in the MoS but I do think it's not their strongest portrayal, but it is one of those ships that I am apparently die-hard for and will take in any universe.

Definitely prefer comic Lois/Clark though, by a mile.

Aragorn/Arwen. I love it in the books. But I didn't actually ship it until I really read the books (read them once as a kid didn't really enjoy them then read them again as an adult after seeing the movies). It just doesn't work for me in the movie. He has more chemistry with Eowyn (and Legolas and Boromir and Theoden and Frodo for that matter) in the movies. I hated movie!Arwen as well. One of my least favorite parts of the adaption in spite of the actually expanded character.

The canon het relationships in FF7. I enjoy Cloris, Cloti, and Zack/Aeris in the games and compilation. Generally I don't like them in fic, though.

I ship Jean/Scott pretty hard in X-Men Evolution, but I don't in the comics(or the movies) really because Scott is kind of a tool and Jean would get shafted so hard from being used as a thing for him and Logan to fight over, and I liked Jean best so it got old fast.

I didn't really ship Thorin/Bilbo in the books, but I dig it so hard in the movies.

Same with Steve/Bucky, I like their relationship in the comics I just don't ship it but to be frank I really don't ship 616 Steve with anyone. Whereas I am all over S/B in the movies.
