Yes Violently. It wasn't just subtle racism that you get in most things where they pretend Asians don't exist or are all hiding somewhere off camera. They took asian culture, offered to empower it by making it the basis for the whole universe, then slammed the door on real life asians hoping to benefit from the taking of their culture. It was an open act of aggression and violence. Why? What's your problem? Is it just that you can't argue with my point so you're going to argue semantics over one word?

Ok, you don't like what I'm saying, don't fucking read, isn't that the philosophy you man-o-sphere dickheads like to screech at feminists?

You certainly don't need to keep fucking harassing me with your utterly worthless bullshit comments.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You should consider anger management therapy. Whatever good points you might have to make are getting lost in the sea of vitriolic hyperbole.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
So... Tone argument? Are you saying women and minorities need to be nice if they want their grievances recognised by white males?

DA What I'm saying is when I see a post filled with profanity and anger I just move along. It kills any urge I have to listen to the poster's pov. Gender and ethnicity don't enter into it. My dislike for dealing with over emotional people does.

I legit laughed at this nonsense. Good job.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
And the republican has a problem with the concepts of a decent human being. I am shock.

Awwww, you even brought politics into it! Stop it, you're cracking me up. It'll give me a heart attack. I should better, maybe fill my diet with more Asian food. That's supposed to be healthy. ;)

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
NA, but are you really surprised? You're about the most stereotypical Republican ever, so it's a hard target to miss if someone wants to bait you. I've never seen evidence of it actually working, but there you go.

But surely Chinese culture appropriates and is influenced by western/white culture as well? I'm not negating your point - it was bizarre and wrong that Firefly had zero Asian characters considering the world it was set in. But all cultures copy and borrow shit from each other. Whiteys aren't the only ones.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I personally don't know what a white culture is supposed to be, but I admit I grew up in the USA so maybe there is a culture that doesn't have the confederate flag in it and I just missed it. BUT my main problem isn't "Americans did this", I mean I don't like it but Americans using other cultures to try and put some stolen cultural depth into a thing is just the way it's done. but to do that and NOT include any people to offer at least a token justification for it? that's gross as shit.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I personally don't know what a white culture is supposed to be, but I admit I grew up in the USA so maybe there is a culture that doesn't have the confederate flag in it and I just missed it Oh, the irony. White culture=American culture. Suuuure. Sure it does.

'Murrica.

LOL. no. did you forget about colonialism??

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I... don't know if I'd call it violent, but I'm Chinese and I rolled my eyes really hard when I heard about a show set in a universe where China is supposedly such a huge influence but there are no actual Chinese people in the cast. It's exactly what I've come to expect from Hollywood, unfortunately. It's right up there with Pacific Rim, for setting at least part of the movie in the whitest version of Hong Kong I've ever seen.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, PR was enraging.

More so because of everyone gushing of how progressive it was to have 1 asian woman in the sidekick role! Fucking enraging.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I have white friends who are all about the social justice who still don't understand why Mako Mori isn't my goddess. It's not that she isn't a good character with some interesting backstory, but... eh. It feels like I'm being thrown a bone here.

Also having China represented in the kaiju pilots with the Wei Tang triplets who have barely any lines? Underwhelmed.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I was rather baffled at Mako and the fan reaction to it. It seemed to me that all she did was follow along with whatever the main white dude told her, and then was unconscious during the final heroic moment. She didn't really seem to have much to do.

But what really offended me was the godawful fake Australian accents. There are so many Australian actors, and I cannot fathom why they didn't hire actual Aussies. Or just not have them be Australian. UGH. Hmmm, apparently I had more feels about PR than I thought.

you kind of twist your perspective on the word "violence." to inflict violence is to harm, right? what joss whedon did was to harm China and Chinese people, including people of the Chinese diaspora because he took our culture and erased the people who made the culture.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-12-07 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, technically, violence refers to physical harm.

At least that's literally the only way I've ever seen it used...

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
To call it an outright act of aggression and violence is attributing a level of intentionality to it that simply isn't there. It's still cultural appropriation, but it's bog-standard appropriation done out of ignorance rather than malice.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much this. I'm not a Whedon fan, but I don't think he did this because he wants to suckerpunch the Chinese or take a dump on their culture. I think it was garden variety, "Ooh, look at this cool stuff and this neat AU we could use that strongly signals this is super duper creative SF and Not Your Typical Universe!" with zero awareness of how weird it looks to cherrypick the neato bits of Chinese culture/language without including any actual Chinese people in your story.

The people who make TV and movies have a long history of this. See: every Asian martial arts flick that stars a white guy, stuff like The Last Samurai, the White Savior trope, etc.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree that it wasn't something motivated by anti-Chinese feelings, but it is profoundly orientalist and I don't think he should get a pass on that.
