You'd be surprised. I know a few Jews who aren't Messianic at all (and view Messianic as being utterly fucking weird) but celebrate Christmas with their friends. It's as much a secular holiday as it's a religious one, at this point.

Your claim that Christmas is "as much a secular holiday as a religious one" is simply untrue. There's nothing secular about a holiday that's been rooted in Christianity for centuries, and that probably originally grew out of pagan festivals that sure as fuck weren't secular.

You say that you know Jewish people who celebrate Christmas along with their friends, but do you really think those Jewish people would be celebrating Christmas if they lived in mostly Jewish communities and didn't have any gentile friends? (Answer: Most likely, they would not.)

You're really, really upset because I suggested that Christmas might have taken on a secular meaning (themes of family, friendship, homecoming, goodwill, none of which are married to religious concepts) outside of its origins in Pagan and later Christian traditions and indeed apart from the entirely unreligious commercialization by corporate interests dating back to the beginning of the industrial age, and that secular nature has made it easier for many Jews (who might even still celebrate Hanukkah with their families) to celebrate Christmas as a secular holiday. That really seems to offend you on a personal level, so you're posting multiple-paragraph whines at me to show how offended you are.

I'm sorry people were meanies to you (and you're certainly allowed to celebrate whatever you want, I personally don't like Christmas either) but it doesn't mean I'm wrong.

What in the world? Christmas is MORE a secular holiday than a religious one, imo. Most people celebrate it with very, very little thought to religion, if any at all. If you're not acting for any divine reason, how could you call it religious? Santa myths, trees, cookies, presents - none of that is remotely biblical. It's just a gift giving family holiday.

If someone doesn't want to participate because of religious reasons, or because it's simply not a part of their culture, that's their choice. But Christmas doesn't actually have to have anything to do with Christianity, and many, many non-Christians celebrate it every year.

I dunno. To me Christmas is pretty damn secular if you choose to see it that way. NO ONE in my immediate family is super Christian, and my father is Jewish. We all celebrate Christmas as a time to get together, eat too much, and buy each other nice things/silly gifts.

Can it be a religious holiday for some people? Absolutely. But I don't think celebrating it as a secular holiday is doing it wrong either.

Christmas IS a secular holiday - at least it can be, and I'd MOST Westerners celebrate it at least mostly non-religiously (as well as some countries like Japan and such). My family is atheist, we celebrate Christmas, very easy to do without religion. Santa, Christmas trees, gift-giving, celebrating with family, wine, good food - completely nothing to do with Christianity.

It's basically a winter solstice feast day with its own mythology that just so happens to currently be called Christmas. Fuck, it used to be a pagan celebration, after all.

I don't think Christmas is a secular holiday, but many people celebrate it as such, so it's possible to treat it that way. I'm also an atheist. I don't decorate a tree, but that's really more about my laziness than any belief system. I exchange presents and have a nice dinner with family and wish people a Merry Christmas, though.

Calling it a secular holiday is not the same thing as telling you you should celebrate Christmas. Hell, I barely celebrate it myself, mostly out of obligation to my mother.

Yes, it is secular. Listen, if you throw a party without any mention of God or any religious dogma, you're not doing something religious. If you don't even think about religion, worship, the divine, religious rules or texts in any way, you are not acting religiously.

I don't give a shit if someone doesn't want to celebrate Christmas. But it's pretty hilarious that you're telling all the non-Christians out there that by celebrating a holiday in a 100% secular way, they are actually being Christians.

Oh man, I totally missed this wank. Just wanted to say that we celebrated Christmas Eve with my Mom's best friend, who is Jewish, and have been doing so for a few years.

My bf and I are non-believers, and we're also in it for the family stuff, not the Christian stuff either.
