Step away from Tumblr and Mark Reads, your dad is right. You are being both over sensitive and overly ridiculous in your attempt to be "correct".

yawn

Random is the word. Or you must be exposed to a very narrow niche of new retro/jazz music.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure how to feel about the word gypsy. I believe Romani who say they consider it a slur, and I wouldn't use it to describe them of course. But the word also describes an archetype that transcends race, and isn't usually an insult. Is there another word that can replace "gypsy" such as it's used in songs by Stevie Nicks?

I guess I feel the same way about the word "bitch". I used to believe that it was just a slur against women and shouldn't be used, but many people have convinced me that it can be used for any gender and often isn't an insult, such as "head bitch in charge". Clearly "bitch" is still mostly used as an insult, but there certainly are shades of grey.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
And not all gypsies are Romani either. All roma are gypsy, but not all gypsies are from the roma tribe. They don't get to tell all the other gypsies that is a slur, when not all gypsies agree on it.

Wait are we supposed to pretend that the word wasn't imposed randomly insultingly on anyone who wasn't a "permanent" resident?

Like any reclaimed word, if you wouldn't have been described by it, don't fucking use it.

There are no shades of gray. If you are a woman and want to describe yourself as a bitch, fine. But don't call anyone else that without their say-so.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
If I call a woman a bitch, it's because she did something to piss me off badly enough that her say-so is the last thing I care about.

Maybe bohemian? That's what I've taken up to avoid using it, anyway.

I think the issue is that it CAN be used as an insult, but by that logic words like "gay" would suddenly be offensive too, just because they're also used as insults.

From what I understand, when you're referring to people you're supposed to capitalize Gypsy. That's what I've read from a Roma who's addressed the subject, and she also said that it differs who you're talking about in general.

Good grief. Stop looking for reasons to be offended.

What the fuck is this secret

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"Voodoo" is offensive? Are songs like Livin La Vida Loca and that one from Labyrinth about "the babe with the power / the power of voodoo" also offensive now because they have that word in them?

Cultural appropriation. Voodoo is a religion y'know.

Explain how "voodoo" is racist.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
How it's used often is. If they are referring to a religious practice, it's fine. f they are talking about hocus pocus bullshit in a disrespectful manner it is racist.

Your dad sounds like scum. Please don't let this shit just slide. If he's scum he needs to be told and if he's just ignorant you can do some serious good by educating him.

Dump yourself.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I really hope you're trolling.

Languages evolve, and words gain new meanings. There is nothing essentially obscene about this kind of drift in meaning just because somewhere back there a term referred to an ethnic group or otherwise could be taken for appropriative.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Um, I think you need to be less sensitive to metaphorical usage of "gypsy" and "voodoo" specifically. It's OK.

/I am not Roma, but I have lived in a French Creole country.

>g*psy

just say the fucking word or use a roundabout if you're so concerned about saying the damn word

that asterisk ain't fooling anybody

on the off-chance anyone dumb enough to get their panties in a knot over this secret's particular use of it sucks hardcore at understanding context

god fucking damn
