I'm not sure how to feel about the word gypsy. I believe Romani who say they consider it a slur, and I wouldn't use it to describe them of course. But the word also describes an archetype that transcends race, and isn't usually an insult. Is there another word that can replace "gypsy" such as it's used in songs by Stevie Nicks?

I guess I feel the same way about the word "bitch". I used to believe that it was just a slur against women and shouldn't be used, but many people have convinced me that it can be used for any gender and often isn't an insult, such as "head bitch in charge". Clearly "bitch" is still mostly used as an insult, but there certainly are shades of grey.

And not all gypsies are Romani either. All roma are gypsy, but not all gypsies are from the roma tribe. They don't get to tell all the other gypsies that is a slur, when not all gypsies agree on it.

Wait are we supposed to pretend that the word wasn't imposed randomly insultingly on anyone who wasn't a "permanent" resident?

Like any reclaimed word, if you wouldn't have been described by it, don't fucking use it.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It is not a reclaimed word because while it can be used as a slur (as any word can) it is not always a slur. And more to the point, it is a word that several groups actually prefer be used by non-group members to refer to them and the lifestyle in general. Also calling a non-roma gypsy a roma is just as, if not moreso, insulting because you are negating their identity and supplanting it with one group which seeks to appropriate sole ownership of the gypsy ethnicity and lifestyle and erase it with their own. Police your own head first, please.

Nah, I'm good, since I wasn't actually talking about just Roma.

It ~not always being a slur, is some revisionist history though.

More importantly, like many groups, that ~preference is not actually consistent within those groups. I'd err on the side of no.

There are no shades of gray. If you are a woman and want to describe yourself as a bitch, fine. But don't call anyone else that without their say-so.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
If I call a woman a bitch, it's because she did something to piss me off badly enough that her say-so is the last thing I care about.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. It's very strange to me that we're picky about insults. You can use this one, but that one is bad!

No. It's an insult. It's supposed to be bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Then for the love of god don't use a gendered insult. Ass-hole is gender neutral and isn't a fucking hate crime, so please, start fucking thinking.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Oh stop being such a yeasty pussy.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Bitch isn't a fucking hate crime either and I'll call men bitches too.

Calling one woman a bitch doesn't insult her for being a woman and does not insult women as a whole. It's like calling a man a bastard or a dick. "Gendered" insults don't work like slurs because they have never been used as a catch-all term for people of that gender. They're just insults that happen to be gender-specific.

Yes, this is how misogyny works, when we decide we can use historically and presently gendered insults as long as we feel they are justified.

You can imagine what women have done to "piss [people] off badly enough" is also typically (though not always) gendered and misogynistic.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 09:38 am (UTC)(link)
Then you're a fucking misogynistic piece of shit. Good luck with that.

There are no shades of gray.

Yes, there are. Extremes are dangerous.

Is there another word that can replace "gypsy" such as it's used in songs by Stevie Nicks?

Maybe bohemian? That's what I've taken up to avoid using it, anyway.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-26 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Be careful, Bohemian was a word that used to be used for people living alternate lifestyles including trans* and homosexuality. By using it you could be opening yourself up to accusations of homophobia, transphobia, and general hatred of those who opt not to conform to social norms in a non-specific way.

[personal profile] dratinis 2015-12-27 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ooph, I had no idea about that. Thank you for letting me know! I'll avoid using that word too and just say kitsch from now on.

I think the issue is that it CAN be used as an insult, but by that logic words like "gay" would suddenly be offensive too, just because they're also used as insults.

From what I understand, when you're referring to people you're supposed to capitalize Gypsy. That's what I've read from a Roma who's addressed the subject, and she also said that it differs who you're talking about in general.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-27 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Insult used to denigrate desert tribespeople in North Africa and the Middle East.
