(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)Second time, I thought it worked really well, especially the last few scenes. Now I really think he fits well.

And... yeah, people miss a lot about his character/the way Adam Driver portrays him. I'm not sure if they completely spaced out throughout half of the movie. (The scene where he's standing sans-helmet in front of Snoke and Hux shows up is pretty telling.)
(Also, an interesting thing I noticed is that the people who complain about his looks are often people who get mad at anyone saying the same thing (looks unattractive/goofy/not Hollywood-hot enough) about a female character. That's pretty hypocritical.)

I disagree though that Star Wars id a kid's movie. It's a movie that can be enjoyed and is appropriately rated for kids - but that does not make it a children's movie.

I think it's a pretty brilliant choice though (and it's so obviously a choice, because Adam Driver *can* look menacing when he wants to, and the styling for him - the much cooed over hair, my god! - was definitely chosen for a reason).
tl; dr: I went in not expecting to give a damn about the new "cool" villain, and went out being obsessed with him. (oops?)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)And I don't even think like he looks that bad? He looks like an average dude? I actually liked that. And I thought he portrayed his character well, which is all I ever want from an actor (I mean, I have a lot of love for Han Solo, but I genuinly thought Harrison Ford was kinda terrible in this half the time?). I'm actually curious as to what will become of him. Definitely more interested in him than that... Snoak thing.
Seriously awesome looking hair tho.

Though I do wonder how he gets all of his hair into the helmet in the first place, it's so floofy!

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, THAT'S THE WHOLE DAMN POINT. You don't have a scene in which Stormtroopers casually back away from one of his temper tantrums without inviting the audience to laugh at him.
And post-Han's death, he'd stepped up and become something much more frightening. I'm really looking forward to what his characterization will be in the next movie.

I've seen a lot of appreciation for Kylo Ren because he feels like an actual (obviously flawed and fucked up) person, and as such has a lot of internal conflict that a lot of villains don't. (Like Darth Maul. I LOVED Darth Maul because of his design, he looked amazing and his lightsaber battle with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan was epic, but if you want actual substance you have to look elsewhere.) He has more personality then you might expect too (he makes jokes, and the 'blowing up at the slightest provocation' was both hilarious and terrifying), so at least for me it was easier to form an attachment to him.
So I like Kylo partially for the fact that he's a different villain for the SW universe, and whichever way his storyline goes I feel like it'll be a good one; there are so many places you could take it, and Adam Driver has done an excellent job with the role so far. (An odd but potent combination of whiny, sassy, frightening and insecure.)

People at my theater laughed at him
(Anonymous) 2016-01-04 12:35 am (UTC)(link)Once I got home and went online to read the first reviews and fan reactions, I half expected him to be mocked everywhere, basically dismissed as a proper villain because of his looks, but the good reviews pleasantly surprised me.
My theater experience influenced my perception of him, though, and I wish it didn't. The laughter stuck with me for some reason, it's difficult to forget because it happened several times during the film. :(

(Anonymous) 2016-01-04 07:14 am (UTC)(link)I have always found Adam Driver incredibly attractive, so while I can accept that he's not everyone's cup of tea, I don't get why they're so adamantly damning him for his looks. Like many in the thread, I will say I don't think the hair or the high neckline suited his features, but that's a styling choice, not anything innate with Driver's looks.
I also buy him as the descendant of his relatives, though that's apparently not a popular opinion.
