I hated him at first but since comparing him to Zuko and also calling him the angry Pomeranian, I've come to appreciate him a bit more. XD

SPOILERS

I'll be honest...

I HATE comparing Kylo Ren to Zuko

Zuko was an abused teenager

Kylo Ren has a family that loves him and would accept him back despite all the terrible things he's done. And he's over 29. And he ends up killing his father to become more powerful. He's Ozai. He's not Zuko. He's Ozai.

I thought he was funny, too. In a dangerous way, but funny nonetheless.

I'm a little confused by this mass reaction to him. I thought he was really chilling and well-done. Obviously, the movie wasn't afraid to poke fun at him - the comical Stormtrooper reaction to one of his tantrums showed that. But I don't really get why people call him emo? What is he emo about? He just wants to be powerful. I rather liked that while he was strong, he clearly wasn't too "super special awesome" to make mistakes and be reprimanded by others, but he was still enormously capable.

I mean I thought the emo Kylo jokes were funny at first, but I don't get why people disliked him. He's the corrupted son who wants power in a world where The Dark Side literally exists.

but whatevs.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I think the emo part comes from him asking the blasted Darth Vader helmet for advice.

I thought he was well written/acted as well. There were certainly funny moments with him (the aforementioned stormtrooper moment, and he even made some jokes/amusing comments), but in a lot of those scenes I was laughing to myself then cringing in fear. Like, yea, it's funny, but also terrifying to watch him lose his shit because even if he's not a true Sith, he's still capable of a lot of destruction.

It was a weird reaction I guess, but I definitely thought he was intimidating at moments.

Then there are moments when he isn't so intimidating, but I liked the contrast; made sense for him, and what his story is so far.

I like some of the jokes, but I also take them with a grain of salt; I still take the character seriously.

Why is he emo? Hmmm

I'm being torn apart. I want to be free of this pain.

Am I the only one who interprets this character as being a brainwashed member of a cult? Because I strongly got that vibe, and no on else seems to be discussing it.

It's all "he's an evil jerkass" or "he's a poor woobie."

I got that too, especially from the novelization.

I'd say so, the "Dark Side" is pretty cult-like. That, or I imagine him as the metaphorical drug addict. Like, even if there is some good in him, he was the one who chose it and he's too far gone to be saved.

Oh, definitely. I mean, he makes me lol but I think he's a bit tragic because he's been seduced to the Dark Side even though he had everything going for him in the Light.

Not to minimize what he's done and I hope he gets taken down, obviously, but yeah.

Haven't read the novelization yet, but considering Leia's comments about Snoke I think it's a possibility. I did at least feel like there's a lot in his backstory that we're completely clueless too, and probably a lot more is going on with Kylo and Snoke then we currently know.

Doesn't mean people can't be upset with him, but I'm at least really interested in knowing more about him (And seeing who he turns into).

I do think he was supposed to come across as slightly ridiculous (and sometimes he is actually funny in a dry way). Terrifying, certainly. But also like a wannabe who tries a bit too hard. Which in itself is also kinda tragic.

I think he's intentionally pretty much everything people think he is (...except maybe the misunderstood romantic hero the shippers are already painting him as), which makes him such an amazing character.

I...see why this a secret.

I definitely like him as a complicated character. Very believable, outside the whole Vader worship. But I hate him. I hate. Him. Grrrr.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I love him, too, and all his emo tantrums. More OOC family art of him and Rey when they were younger omg

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 07:01 am (UTC)(link)
Kylo Ren is a pretty interesting villain. There are definitely parts that are meant to be taken as comedic, like when he's slashing things with his light saber and the storm troopers just walk away. Since he's Han and Leia's son and Leia believes he still has good in him, I don't think he's supposed to be seen as a total monster.

I appreciate how this movie can have a villain and not make him this totally serious and flawless badass. He comes off like a kid with daddy issues and throwing a tantrum most of the time, but also has this great power that makes him a threat.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe there were some outside sources that answer this, but why is Kylo Ren looking to Darth Vadar as inspiration for the dark side?

Didn't he train with Luke for some time? Didn't Luke ever tell him the truth about his father being ultimately a good person who was just lost to the dark side? If anything Anakin's story should be a cautionary tale to anyone being seduced by the dark side.

I can't imagine why Luke wouldn't tell his jedi students about him.

This might not be exact but I'm pretty sure there's a passage in the novel where he acknowledges that Darth Vader 'fell to weakness' (i.e. good) at the last moment, and he's going to finish what he started and not 'fall into that same trap.'

So basically he loves Darth Vader except for those last moments.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
I really don't care much for him, but I agree that pretty much most of his scenes kind of played out as comedic. And when he took the helmet off, I couldn't take him seriously.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-09 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
same here
and then I saw this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WCRAuIcjsc) and now I can't take him even less seriously

The problem is that Adam Driver was poorly cast in this role. He is unattractive and too old. You know who would have been cool in the role? Ezra Miller.
