Most of the music I like is pretty old; a lot of my favorites is 60-70’s punk/rock.

Finding out that most of my favorite artists are statuary rapists broke my heart a little, I find it harder and harder to enjoy their music.

The past was a,different country. A much more uninhibited and sexually adventurous one, despite its veneer of respectability. Teenage girls actively pursued older men. They didn't lie about their ages, necessarily, but no one made a big deal about it, either. If they looked old enough to be where they were, it was assumed they were old enough to be there.

It's hard to believe despite all the talk about sexual progressiveness, the younger generation is actually much more conservative and regressive.

ONe thing that's bothering me is that one of the "David Bowie is a rapist" posts going around specifically tags Woody Allen and the OP (of that post, not this FS one) says that "yeah, Bowie is a great musician and yeah, everyone's a big fan and no, he's not evil but we have to just accept that Your Fave is Problematic because he Raped a Child" and sometimes you just gotta learn to live with it.

But the words "raped a child" are very, very loaded and imply something that did not actually happen. Bowie had sex one time with an extremely willing person in their late teens who lied about their age to get into the club in the first place.


And to put things in perspective, Bowie was about 17 when he moved in with his first manager, who he allegedly had an affair with.

Sounds more like your problem if you can't separate a song from the person singing it, or realize a 50 year old act is a product of its time. The 60s and 70s were not the 2010s. How long have you been a fan, that you haven't picked up on the totally different social norms?

I think there's a point you have to admit that a lot of male musicians, no matter the genre, are on some level gross. It's still possible to divorce the art from the artist in some instances. Cosby is an exception since he purposely tied his real fictional, Dr. Huxtable, persona with his real life self.

If this is about the thing with Bowie, holy shit, who cares? It's like, the most insignificant shit. It was a little bit dodgy at most.

It was the early 70s, everyone has high as fuck, she was in a club, she was actively trying to pick up dudes, she didn't look young, and she WASN'T that young. Like, there are plenty of developed countries where the age of consent is 15. Where I live it's 16, and the idea that it would be completely fine if she were a few months older is ridiculous. Most importantly, she was happy with the whole experience, and continued to be decades later. She didn't feel that he was taking advantage of her at all.

I'm not even a fan of his, so this isn't coming from a place of bias. I just think it's a total non-issue and I don't get why anyone is making a big deal of it now except as an excuse to shit on a dead guy. I mean, shit, if that's the worst you can dig up on him then he must have been pretty cool. I don't see how it can affect your opinion of him so much.

Usually I would agree but when the "victim" intentionally lied about her age, that's a different story. What, do you expect people to check IDs at the bedroom door?

I feel like there are times where you can separate the art from the artist. Everyone has a different dividing line on that, but I personally still appreciate Bowie as an artist.

It can be hard sometimes when you look into the history of amazing artists, like do you know how many classic painters had 13 year old mistresses? A lot. And as much as you might say "those were different times", well so were the 60s and 70s especially where groupie culture was concerned.

I think it's more important to work on changing our current culture to make sure we don't keep repeating these kind of problems.

It's problematic as hell, I agree. But one thing to consider is that it was another time period and by and large, the now-women look back on the era fondly, and do not consider it traumatic. I don't know about Iggy Pop, but in David Bowie's case, their reminisces were... ahem... rather enthusiastically positive.

If I'd been in their shoes back in the day and had the looks for it, I would've been tempted to do the same. As it was, I did date guys considerably older than me when I was 16-17, and I am fine. I'm not saying that everyone would be, but in cases of statutory rape, you must remember it's defined by the age of the participants, not their state of mind.

I mean, I've no idea if Dave Mustaine ever banged a teenager or anything, but he was the point that drove the "never learn about your heroes" lesson home for me.
