I hate how it feels like artists that do commissions on Tumblr right now have the tone of; "commission me, or I'll be homeless.” I completely understand it, but I don't like to feel like I'm being guilted into buying something that I want.

Congratulations, you just discovered what makes marketing work: emotional manipulation.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone who posts stuff like that I assume they are just trying to get guilt money. But if they are that close to being homeless then maybe it's time to get off the computer and find a way to generate real income. Same goes for most people with paypal or crowd sourcing links.

really most stuff dealing with people asking for money on the Internet is kinda weirding me out lately, so i don't disagree

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno. Most of the ones I've seen are artists who are only taking commissions because they're in real financial trouble. They're not just using the fact that they're broke as a marketing ploy.

"Commission me or I'll be destitute!" ranks right up there with crappy gofundme campaigns.

I suppose it is kind of 'guilt trippy' but when artist's state things like 'I need to make this much money in a certain amount of time or I'll be kicked out by my abusive parents', it's usually to show that the situation is urgent

I don't have a job or any money myself, so when I see posts like that, I do kind of feel bad but I just reblog so other people can see them and help out if they can

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Wow why so judgemental, people?

I have a friend does emergy commissions because she and her pets fall ill all the time and there's no way her paychecks can cover it all. If she can earn a quick buck drawing cute stuff for people, what the fuck is the problem??

Only today I blacklisted the phrase 'signal boost'. Hon, my bank balance is down to 'maybe enough to go to a movie if I don't buy popcorn' levels, I don't have the patience for your troubles along with my own.

Agreed. Bonus points for the ones that also include "I'm LGBT/ have mental health problems/ being abused" for added guilt tripping. Sorry your life sucks I guess??

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of hate it because it sort of of denotes a atmosphere that the only way you're 'allowed' to take commissions, especially fanart ones, is if you have no other choice.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Guilt tripping sucks, sure, butnsondoes the ridiculous degree of entitlement that comes with the feeling like you shouldn't have to pay for what you want. You're not owed free things.

Welcome to tumblr, I guess. On some level I'm sympathetic, but it really puts me off.

offtopic, but. A pretty secret.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really mind it when artists do that. They want to give you something for your money. I personally don't ever comission anything, because it's expensive. I know the prices are valid, but I still can't afford it (especially when I'm not even sure if I get a physical picture or just an online one?).

I also usually don't mind it, when pets are sick or it's an emergency and the person is desperate and clearly doing everything they can.
But the same thing as above applies, because it's a stranger on the internet (often in another country) and I can never be 100% they're not lying and I don't have a paypal account to boot. I would help a friend if I can that month, tho.

What I do raise my eyebrows at are people constantly making those posts, begging for money (without offering something). I have someone on my dash who reblogs all her friend's posts about how she needs money because disaster xyz happened.
It's the typical tumblr narrative of abused/mental illnes/queer/nonbinary/art student and I just... don't know what to think about it.
On ONE hand, I feel pretty bad about thinking bad of this struggling person. On the OTHER hand, I just scroll down.
(I would never send them hate or anything like that of course)

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I work as an artist for a living, and these sorts of posts often really rub me the wrong way.

I'm not freelance, but quite a few of my friends live solely off commissions. None of them do this shit, b/c spewing out a sob-story to a bunch of broke teenagers and asking for a handout is tacky af.

The thing is, it takes a lot of work to do art commissions for a living. You can't just be a decent artist, you have to be skilled and fast enough to turn enough pieces to pay the bills, you have to understand budgeting, and how to promote your work, and how to build and maintain an audience, and how to price your work, and how to communicate with a client clearly enough to give them what they wanted, and how to showcase your best pieces, and a million other skills.

Throwing up a "SIGNAL BOOST MY CAT HAS CANCER AND ALSO I'M TRANS AND MY PARENTS BEAT ME PLEASE BUY MY ART" post is honestly fairly predatory (especially when your market is gullible teens, as with so many fandom artists) and puts other artists in a position where they feel their only choice is to guilt-trip potential customers into a sale.

It also can quickly bite the artist in the ass, especially if they keep having emergency sales. Keep throwing your life's problems up all over your commission info and people will start to view you as a scammer. And you'll automatically alienate a lot of potential customers who don't like the guilt trip.

It's not a new thing, though, it's been around on LJ forever. Very few people make money out of fanart and most who do draw furry art.

Actually

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
There's a tumblr blog that's called something like "emergency commissions" where artists who are in severe financial hardships (and before you bitch about "THEN WHY CANT THEY GET A REAL JOB" in a lot of cases these people very limited time to raise the money or are injured/disabled) can get their commission info up. I'm rarely in a position where I could buy artwork, but I'll signal boost the artists whose styles I enjoy.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't necessarily hate it, but I definitely can't think of people who do that in any sort of professional capacity.

What I hate is when they may be that bad off, but they're not making enough from commissions to live on. If this is your income, at least give yourself something close to minimum wage if not a living wage. I don't think most of these young people can actually sell enough $6 dollar sketches to pay any bills.

I have only ever commissioned fanart once, and the artist (a needle felter) didn't use guilt-tripping tactics. I think I would have been put off her if she had, and likely never put my commission in with her as a result.

However because she didn't do that stuff, and she was great about me paying it off in installments (felties to be sent after it was fully paid), I got two adorable Transformers needle-felted figures that are on display, on a shelf across the room from me right now.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-21 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you 100% OP. I've had acquaintances who always seemed to need 'emergency money' to the point where it felt like the Boy Who Cried Wolf. Any sort of guilt tripping keeps my wallet firmly closed.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-23 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Bitch, I got my own motherfuckin' bills to pay, I ain't paying your bills too.
