Liking these books is just another symptom of rape culture. the fact that people can like a character who commits the worst crime, the worst violation that can be committed against a woman in the fist book and people follow along the rest of the series in his search for redemption like he can ever be redeemed? That is rape culture. So yes it's bad, but it's not unexpected. Honestly it would have been a better book if his illness had killed him before he got to that part.

the worst violation that can be committed against a woman

You. You need to get out more.

Oh do change the record, one note anon.

NA

I;m pretty sure it also counts as rape culture. Also OP would probably argue that we don't live in a murder culture, which I can kinda get behind.

I know this is a throwaway comment, but I think you could probably argue that the United States does, in fact, have a 'murder' culture. Or at least a violent culture.

IDK man. Rape is pretty awful, but I still think murder and several forms of torture would be worse things to happen to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Strange how you specify "woman". Do you not think that men are raped too or do you think it's not the worst thing that can be done to a man?

And have you thought of things like torture and murder? Do you not think those are far worse? If not, why not?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I know you're trolling, but I get really tired of "the worst crime, the worst violation" everrrr. You have to know how problematic and devaluing that kind of statement is for those who have been raped, but you just keep repeating it for the replies. So I guess here's one more reply, but it's just to say how deeply tired I am of hearing that obnoxious sentiment packaged as concern for women.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
This. One of my friends was raped, and she was actually more messed up by all of the people who kept telling her she should be horribly traumatized by what happened to her than she was by the rape itself. She wasn't all that traumatized, so she started thinking there was something wrong with her for not reacting in the way she was "supposed" to react. Which is bullshit because everyone deals with/reacts to things in their own way and there is no one proper reaction to something like rape.

Holy cats! I read one or more of these books decades ago. I can see why the fandom might not be active, but maybe you'll spark a few new readers, anon, and then there will be a resurgence.

There are things that intrigue me about the books. But I can't get past the main character raping someone. I just can't. The villain of this series is actually the most intriguing thing to me. But I need someone to root for, and I can't root for a rapist.
esteefee: Ronon pinching the bridge of his nose (facepalm)

[personal profile] esteefee 2016-01-20 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I tried to read it but I couldn't get past that point.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Welp, I'm definitely not reading these books now. I can't really get past heroes who do stuff like that - same with 'heroes' who torture people or commit murder, and they're portrayed as 'the good guys' so that makes it okay. I can't cheer on people like that.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
But the main character is not really portrayed as a hero. I wouldn't go so far as anti-hero, but he's flawed and screwed up and does horrible things and sometimes ends up doing the right thing. It's a lot more complicated than did a bad thing = villain. The book may not be your thing, which is fine, but there is a lot more complexity to the character than that.

[personal profile] philippos42 2016-01-20 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I found the first one tedious, and I can't say I like them myself, but I don't think I agree that just liking them is such a bad thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry but I can't get over how dumb that title is, calling someone "Lord Foul" is a little too on the nose

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's supposed to be on the nose. That's the point. He's the embodiment of evil and plus, part of the theme of the first trilogy is the question of whether this place is even real or is part of the imagination of the main character who is a writer.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
I couldn't deal with the fact that the guy not only rapes someone, but he's REALLY WHINEY.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-20 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
Haha yeah to be honest I got a little past the rape part, then gave up because Thomas committing the real sin of a fictional character: he wasn't interesting to spend time with.

OH dear gods. I read the first two, that's all i could stomach. I wanted to take Thomas Covenent and beat him with a fucking stick. ARRGH!!

Good on you if you can slog through all, what, six? or whatever. But fuck me, they sucked.

Ehh, I simply struggled to even be able to read the book. I've read an anthology of Donaldson's short stories and frankly I think his whole style is bit to tiresome for me, even if in the end I liked "Daughter of Regals".
