I sometimes argue when people talk about Cosplay Bullying as if it's a brand new thing that's just recently gotten bad. I point out people have bullied cosplayers for decades and if anything it's gotten better.

I don't say that the reason I know, is 20 years ago I was one of the bullies. I was a stupid tween on all the cosplay hate forums adding my voice to those saying everyone was too fat, too ugly, or the wrong race to cosplay.

I would never do it now, but back then no one was trying to condemn it or treat it like a problem. But just because people weren't calling it out doesn't mean it didn't exist.

Is that a guy? If so, that is a pretty guy.

The face looks feminine to me.

Agreed. They're just finding new reasons to bully IMO. Now they're doing it to try and look ~righteous~.

Some people just should take into account their costume and weight before playing though, look at that time Chris Christie cosplayed a baseball player. We did not need to see that, and he should have chosen a better costume for his shape. He is worse than that super large black costume Spider-Man.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Male or female, fat or thin, any costume where everyone can see you juggle your junk like Christie did is a bad thing. A bad, bad, eye scarring, thing.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Anyone of any size can cosplay, but it's important to consider whether or not a particular costume is going to look good on your body type. One of my friends is a size 20 and she does amazing, beautiful costumes that she's won tons of awards for, but she always picks things that will flatter her figure - nothing skintight or super-revealing. And she's cosplayed from a ton of popular series (Drrr!, Code Geass, Sailor Moon, Zelda, to name just a few) so it's not as if there's any shortage of costumes that look good on people who are plus-sized.

okay, anon, 20 years ago was 1996. As someone who was in college at that time, when the internet was still mostly usenet newsgroups, AOL, and Prodigy boards, I doubt there were cosplay hate forums then.

please to clarify whether you're being hyperbolic.

(that said, I find it astonishing that everyone forgets that up until about 5 years ago, anyone and everyone was still mocking nerds wearing costumes to conventions. and now it's cool? I want it to be lame and nerdy again.)

There were internet forums in 1996. I have no idea if they existed for cosplay, but it's not the weirdest thing to imagine.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
OP - I was bullying before I started high school, which was in 1998. There were AOL rooms and geocities sites for sure and geocities started in 1994. It's possibly it was only 19 years instead of 20.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-24 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Bulletin boards and email lists were a definite thing then too.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-25 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who used newsgroups, there was plenty of bullying going around back then. So it's not unheard of.

I've been cosplaying since before it was even called cosplay in the U.S. I was once given an award for cosplay by the man who literally invented cosplay, though it wasn't called that then either. (Forrest J. Ackerman. Look it up.)

And we've always been mocked. I grew up knowing I was a punchline on Night Court, on Roseanne, on SNL, on everything. It was NORMAL back then, you accepted it before you even assembled your outfit.

Yes, targeted cyberbullying within the community is worse now, and I don't pretend it feels the same. But fucking hell, at least you kids HAVE a community outside of conventions now.

Well, at least you grew as a person, I guess?

Are people claiming the bullying is new? Because yeah it definitely isn't, but I haven't seen people claim it's new so much as just try to bring attention to the problem in general.

I will say the thing about bullying these days is it goes way further a lot faster then it used to. Like yeah, back in the day there were people who would troll forums and some central figures who would get harassed, but most people were still fairly anonymous back then and it was a lot easier to flounce if you wanted to.

Now people literally stalk those they want to harass and it goes way beyond those 300 people that may have been on that forum/newsgroup/website and can now be seen by literally thousands upon thousands of people.

For better or worse, fandom is more public now, and I think that's at least part of the reason people are bringing up cosplay bullying more.

This I can believe.

Because, yea, no way is any form of bullying new, but I can believe it's a bigger problem now because of how much easier it is to find and share stuff. You upload a picture online and there's no telling where it'll end up or what kind of response it'll provoke. (And some people do get stalked and harassed, which is never okay.)

Frankly, as cool as cosplay seems, I wouldn't want to for this very reason.

Oh, and I'm glad you stopped, OP.

I saw several posts and articles that were all asking how to get back to the Good Ol' Days of cosplaying where no one bullied or made fun of anyone. That it was a flaw with Kids These Days and a symptom of twitter and texting and all the other weird newfangled smartphone things that are ruining moral fiber.

I didn't notice until you mentioned it, but that's totally a pink and purple Boba Fett.

Oh gosh! I totally missed the helmet! I was thinking "Hmm... don't recognize that. Must be some anime I'd never heard of." I can see it now - the Aurora part, too!
