They're presented as female and referred to with female pronouns in the show. They're "non-binary" by alien terms, but they are female characters.

They're biologically non-sexually-dimorphic but nothing in the show indicates they're actually agender. In terms of human culture, which the main Gem characters live and participate in, they are female.

If it's supposed to be a representation of non-binary gender identity (which I doubt), it's doing a shit job of it.

I don't know that I agree that they are all that deep or likable, but that's personal opinion so I won't argue that point.

I will ask you what you're watching that you think there aren't other animated shows out there like that? Like just look at all the things Steven Universe takes from (rips off) there are TONS of deep and likable female characters in anime.

One example of an anime SU takes from - Utena, it is fucking deep as hell and full of great female characters.

This is probably an unfair assumption, but my first thought was that OP meant western cartoons - the stuff airing on CN, Nickelodeon, etc - in which case, I agreed with them, since with Korra off the air SU is probably the show with the most visible, consistent, thorough and 'deep' female characters.

I wouldn't say it's an unfair assumption since I thought maybe OP meant western cartoons as well but since the secret didn't specify, I thought bringing up anime might be a suggestion OP hadn't thought of. Particularly if OP is younger and perhaps had not seen things like Utena or any of the other old school animes SU takes from.

Like I agree that western cartoons definitely need more compelling female representation, but I wouldn't agree with a sweeping generalization that gives SU the only credit in the history of animation (even in regards to western cartoons.)

Utena was ok, but you can only recc super old darlings for so long. this feels like people recommending Lilo & Stitch forever and ever for the sister relationship. you know one movie or series won't last fans forever?

Well, maybe the network will try to mimic what this show brought to the table in the future. Despite SU suffering from a hype backlash right now, I still quite like it, and am looking forward to how it affects how the future cartoon network shows will be like.

I'm sorry to say, but with the success of Steven Universe, I doubt CN won't at least try to take another stab at whatever they feel went right with it... Maybe they'll try out a new aesthetic though!

Out of curiosity, what DO you want on CN? Is it the color palette that bugs you? The fact that it's generally optimistic? The fact that it can be cheesy? And it is CN, after all.
