Would this happen or would a conservative country just not air the show at all? Genuinely asking, I have no idea (and don't know much about this show to begin with). Has something like this ever happened before?

I believe the creators of Adventure Time & Legend of Korra said similar things, that they weren't allowed to have as much gay content as they'd like because of the international markets and it's true here too, there was a dance scene between Rose and Pearl that was censored in the UK.

...in the UK of all places? But isn't the UK more liberal than the US?

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
No. Liberal British people just like to think it is.

ayrt - it's weird, right? but yeah

Not really.

The UK broadcast was also shown in various European and Middle Eastern countries - it was censored for them, not the UK.

I think with some animes? They either fudge the gender or pretend the characters are cousins.

They did just air a censored version of a Steven Universe episode in the UK (one of the MANY sensual dance scenes was edited, it's kind of weird that they picked on just one. But I think the show gets away with a lot since women are allowed to be affectionate/touchy without it automatically reading as romantic).

Ugh, the whole censoring thing is so so stupid.

What's even worse, is that every anti-sjw I knew came out of the woodworks and obsessively defended it.

In Russia, they gave Ruby a male voice, so yeah.

Ayart

Wow, thanks. I had no idea.

Keep in mind, all those examples are at least ten years old. The most recent one got re-dubbed and the censorship was removed. Likewise, Steven Universe probably wouldn't have been able to get away with Ruby and Sapphire (or Pearl and Rose or a lot of other things) until recently either.

Ahh, I see. Thanks!

Ha ha I hardly ever watched the show, but I remember that thing about Sailor Moon. I remember a scene where the those two are touching hands and blushing and it's very emotionally charged and one of the other characters is like "ISN'T IT NICE HOW THOSE COUSINS ARE SO CLOSE?" I liked to pretend the other characters were just really, really oblivious.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I had a thought that, in-universe, calling someone your cousin was just the go-to label when the character didn't want to really explain who they were. Same thing happened with Serena saying Rini was her cousin and vice-versa. The obliviousness is definitely not far-fetched, though.

(Anonymous) 2016-01-27 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I still get a chuckle out of that.

Of course, dub companies being oblivious I know is not a new thing. You can change the dialogue, but the animation will win out. (And I still get a kick out of the fact that apparently making lesbians incestual somehow makes it less offensive? Bwahaha.)

I don't think the dubbers themselves are oblivious, so much as trying to get crap past the radar.

The problem is, all that censoring did was take two lesbian's and make them two lesbians in an incestuous relationship. Yeah they were a little less overt about it, but they were cousins, of course they were trying to hide it! (badly)
