Would this happen or would a conservative country just not air the show at all? Genuinely asking, I have no idea (and don't know much about this show to begin with). Has something like this ever happened before?

I believe the creators of Adventure Time & Legend of Korra said similar things, that they weren't allowed to have as much gay content as they'd like because of the international markets and it's true here too, there was a dance scene between Rose and Pearl that was censored in the UK.

I think with some animes? They either fudge the gender or pretend the characters are cousins.

They did just air a censored version of a Steven Universe episode in the UK (one of the MANY sensual dance scenes was edited, it's kind of weird that they picked on just one. But I think the show gets away with a lot since women are allowed to be affectionate/touchy without it automatically reading as romantic).

Who actually created Ruby's design? A bit of digging turned up someone called Aleth Romanillos who worked on character designs, but it doesn't say which characters he was involved in designing.

(I can see how she could be interpreted as masculine with a different voice, of course, but her design doesn't strike me as intentionally androgynous - of course, that may be just because all the gems have feminine designs and presentations. which would also lead me to wonder how well the "but Ruby's a guy, don't worry!" thing would work"

I feel like they're just made to be the classic opposites attract type of couple as opposed to having the forethought put into how they'd have to be altered for other countries.

I don't watch the show, but her design does strike me as all that masculine.

And I know color preferences can be different in other parts of the world, but purple and pink tend to be standard here for girls and things meant for girls. Also, I thought her name was Ruby.

I really dislike her design? It's blocky and unpleasant. I like Sapphire's more, but the one eye bugs me. None of the other gems have only one eye, so why her?

okay you're making this out to be an "if" situation but the show is already airing in those countries and that's generally not how they've chosen to censor it, so like, i'm not sure what your point is
