whatcha reading?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm reading 'Choices of One' by Timothy Zahn. I've read his Star Wars books as soon as they come out but I don't think I'd read this one since then, so I'm enjoying it! Man knows how to craft a plot with a lot of twists and turns, but he plays fair with his twists and everything makes sense.

(I've also got a stack of Jedi Apprentice books in the bathroom that I'm reading bit by bit. So much nostalgia!)

Ooh my friend's got me reading Jedi Apprentice too!

Are you liking them? I just started to reread them and I was ready to temper my expectations, like "Well you adored these when you were 12 but they'll probably be really childish now" but I genuinely still love them! I especially like the portrayal of Qui-Gon--he's a genuinely admirable and interesting man and a great teacher, but his flaws aren't at all brushed over and they have real consequences. I love that he learns as much from Obi-Wan as Obi learns from him (although I keep wanting to shake them like EMPATHIC BONDS DON'T COVER EVERYTHING, *TALK* TO EACH OTHER YOU TURNIPS!!)

(here, have a comic about JA I've laughed over at least a dozen times since I found it: http://dakt37.tumblr.com/post/120503756729/just-a-thing-i-had-to-get-out-of-my-system )

The comic is perfect. I love the fight scene/dance panel.

I'm really enjoying the books too and I feel pretty much the same way about Qui-Gon. I admire him but I feel so bad for Obi-Wan every time he's acting all distant. I think I have a soft spot for characters who are desperate to prove themselves to another.

star wars books: are they good? what are your faves? what are your recs, anon? I'm thinking about looking into it.

personally though, not really reading anything right now. I still have the next Preston-Child book sitting on my shelf unread, so I should probably do that.

Some are amazing, some are garbage, some are inbetween! The Thrawn Trilogy by Timothy Zahn is the place to start. Next would probably be the XWing series by Stackpole and Allston, especially if you aren't all about all jedi all the time. Really any book by Zahn or Stover is a safe bet. I really like the JEdi Apprentice series although they can be quite simplistic--they're middle-grade novels--but there's some amazing low-key worldbuilding and foreshadowing, esp. as regards the Jedi, and Qui-Gon and wee bb Obi-Wan are where it's at.

Anything by Zahn or Stackpole is good. Darth Plagues is good. I enjoyed Kevin J. Anderson's ones, but most of the fandom doesn't. Stover is good.

Howl's Moving Castle! Almost done with it too. Gonna re-watch the movie with my friend when I'm done and also read the other books in the trilogy (I didn't even know it was a series until recently).

Heh; I had read the book before the movie was even a thing and was FURIOUS about the movie adaptation because I was 15 and over-protective.

(In retrospect, HMC is not even in my top 5 favorite Diana Wynne Jones' books now. You should read more of her books if you end up liking it! The Chrestomanci books and Dalemark Quartet are still perennial re-reads for me)

This is part of a foray into DWJ for me! I have read all the Chrestomanci books as well as the standalones Hexwood and Deep Secret. So far Deep Secret is my favorite book of all of them. I've been on a real kick lately and shall continue to read more!

I have seen the movie once and though it was really fun, but I've forgotten many of the details. Apparently it's quite different from the book. My friend who recommended DWJ to me in the first place loves them both equally, which she says is unusual for her wrt movie adaptations (she usually prefers the book, I think).

Have you read Allegiance? I don't remember if Choices of One or Allegiance is first but I loved both of them. I just started reading Zahn's Dragonback series based on a rec here, and I'm enjoying it.

I'm currently in the middle of David McCullough's "The Great Bridge" which is the history of the Brooklyn Bridge. I love bridges, so this is fascinating.

Re: whatcha reading?

(Anonymous) 2016-02-03 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I have! I'm going through my collection chronologically, so Allegiance was right before this one basically.

I think I'm the one that rec'd Dragonback to you so I'm glad you like it! MY whole family does--even my 94-year-old grandma. The concept of Draycos' race is super cool, and I like how each book has its own story while building more and more stuff towards the climax. Where are you in the series? 'Slave' and 'Herdsman' are my favorites!

I just finished the first two, so Thief and Soldier? My local library had the first two, but now I have to wait for the third one to come in.

I think Scoundrels was the only Zahn book I didn't like. I have so many to read books that I don't have time to go back and reread. And most are buried in boxes. I have a feeling I'll be in for quite a surprise when I move and realize just how many books I have.

I love Zahn's book in general. Afte becoming obsessed with his writing in the Star Wars books, I picked up his Cobra books and they were good. So I'll read anything by him. I just love the way he writes characters.

I guess I'll need to add those to my massive pile of to read books.

He really knows how to blend plot and characters without dragging everything down and keeping it all consistent.

Does fanfic count? I'm reading a Han/Luke fic, which is a pairing I've never actually shipped before. But it's a very plotty, world-buildy story and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

Fanfic for sure counts! I just finished (well, it's a WIP) reading a long complex SG1/Star Wars fusion fic that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I didn't see that ship until the deleted sandstorm scene came out and now I totally get it. Link to the fic? :D

Oooh SG1 + Star Wars? Link me please?

Yes that sandstorm scene was very helpful to me too! :D
Here's the fic:

Well, shit. Sure, my Stargate/Star Wars crossover is unpublished an =d stalled for years, but it seems less unique now.

Catacomb by Madeleine Roux. It's . . . okay. My friend is a big fan of the Asylum books, so I'm reading the third one so we can discuss it. The books aren't bad, but they're not my thing and I find them kinda boring.

The Possibility Dogs. The author also wrote Scent of the Missing, which I enjoyed, so I'm hoping this one is good as well. (Non-fiction about service dogs, her other book was about her work with search and rescue dogs.)

Run of His Life: The People vs. OJ Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin, in preparation for American Crime Story starting tonight. I was just young enough to not really know anything about the case/trial so the book is really enlightening to me (like, the whole glove thing? I assumed it was evidence but never knew about how there was one at the crime scene and one at his house. Also for some reason the glove made me think he had strangled her. idk why, but I was also corrected on that.)

I actually just finished the first two 'Raven Cycle' books, and now need to get the last two. I thought they were pretty neat, mythos-wise, and character-wise, though the 'omg, he spent a dime on me, my pride!! he's a dickhead!!' atmosphere got on my nerves.

I'm just about to start Flesh, by Kylie Scott. It's a m/m/f zombie apocalypse novel, which is my catnip in a couple of ways.

Please, please, don't anyone tell me if you didn't like it. I want to form my own opinion.
