Trans headcanons

(Anonymous) 2016-02-10 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I always get confused when people throw out a picture of a character generally understood to be a man or a woman and talk about their trans headcanons for it.

Like, for example, are you saying the character people generally see as a man is a transman or are you saying they may be AMAB -- and may even present as male -- but you headcanon them as being transwomen who haven't transitioned (or do a really unfortunate job of passing)?

Or are both answers true and it just depends on the person? Let me know, and give me your best trans headcanons. No judgments here, please.

If someone just says a character is trans but don't say what gender, I assume it means they think the character transitioned to the gender they are in canon. Right now that's what's more common when the person specifies the gender, e.g. "[canonically male character] is a trans man."

A few years ago the opposite seemed more common, where people would headcanon that characters were trans but hadn't transitioned yet and were still presenting as their assigned gender. I'm glad this seems to be disappearing in favor of the above scenario, since it doesn't rely on gender stereotyping. Now the main problem with post-transition headcanons is the trend of picking the most feminine-looking male characters in a fandom as the trans guys and the most masculine-looking female characters as trans girls.

From what I can tell, on Tumblr anyway, it's not deep thought out thing. It's very simple. They see a girly boy or a not so girly girl and assume that the girly boy is a transman and the not so girly girl as a transwoman.

That's it. Or, if they are rather androgynous, but have SOME SMALL characteristic that leans one way or the other, that's the headcanon. Look at that one female character in AoT awhie back. She likes potatoes as I can't remember her name.

Pretty much. It's ridiculously sexist when you get right down to it.

I honestly think that most trans headcanons are sexist. The transwoman headcanons are the women that like stereotypical "guy" things and look more physically masculine, the opposite for transman headcanons. It's frankly ridiculous and terrible.

Agreed. The only trans headcanon that I've ever seen in one of my fandoms is for the feminine-looking guy, because a guy who looks feminine must really be physically female, right? Why couldn't the buff soldier or the cute girly-girl be trans?

YEARS ago I saw someone float the idea of SGA's John Shepard being a transman, and I thought that was pretty awesome.

See, I would like to see more trans headcanons like that, because those could be really interesting. I just hate how the ones I see are always so sexist and gender essentialist.
