The anime isn't based on the manga, nor the manga based on the anime. The manga creator and the anime creator developed the idea together and did their own things with it-- they're very different. I thought the anime was a lot more groundbreaking in terms of its message to women; the manga seemed to conform to a lot more traditional ideas.
