And yet Malfoy/Hermione is (for the most part) accepted even though Malfoy referred to her with bigoted slurs and wished for her death on numerous occasions.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it? I think if Draco/Hermione is more accepted it's because people can forgive Draco's shitty-ass behavior as a 12 year old more than Snape's bullshit at 35.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I mean, a douchey kid being a douche... or douchey man who is also a pedophile. I'm not surprised one is more accepted than the other.

Age of consent in Britain is 16.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Which isn't Hermoine's age throughout most of the series.

Not to mention, a 16-year-old with a 40-something-year-old is still pretty gross, legal or not. but ykinmk and such

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmhmm. That's why so many Snape/Hermione fics take pains to say Hermione is way older thanks to her use of the Time Turner when their sexy intellectual times start during her fourth year.

What fics were YOU reading? Cause every fic I ever read had her either 18 in her last year or she was in college.

Hamerican Mione?

That doesn't make it healthy or good for a teacher to be banging a student half his age. Also, if the only argument you can make for it is that it isn't technically illegal, then you are basically admitting that there is nothing else to recommend it.

I think they were just pointing out that it's not technically pedophilia since that's what the anon they were replying to referred to it as. and, well, it isn't pedophilia. that doesn't exactly make it a paragon of shipping obviously but there you go

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Pedophilia refers to someone who is prepubescent. Snape fucking an 11 or 12 year-old Hermoine definitely is pedophilia.

Is that really what people are writing though? (I doubt it)

Your doubt is valid. Most fics that I have encountered where a student character is shipped with one of the adults often sets the fic in the student's sixth year. Sure, not all of them do, but I think fics with younger children have become far rarer over the years, and the one example I can think of is one I encountered on AFF.net.

I think not only do people make sure to write of-age people on the bottom of their age gaps and are very afraid of accidentally making it look like pedophilia (or ephebophilia but I guess most people just lump them together and they're both creepy so yeah) but I also think peoples' kinks are more interested in both people being adults; it fits better with their fantasies and/or their preferred ship dynamics.

That's my guess at least based on what I've seen of this (fairly popular) trope. Personally I don't like age gaps

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt, and I agree that it's neither healthy nor good. And yet, I don't have a problem with stating the legalities, as far too many people throw around the word 'pedophile' with anything with any age difference they don't like, whether or not it's an accurate use of the word.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Pedophile has nothing to do with legality. If a country has no age of consent, or an age of consent of 9, that doesn't magically make people who have sex with children not pedophiles.

Pedophilia is sexual attraction to someone who is prepubescent. If Hermione is 11, 12, even 13, there's a good chance that's exactly what we're talking about.

Veeeeeery few girls are prepubescent at 13. Though I otherwise agree with you.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Well, "very few" isn't true. Plenty of girls are still 100% prepubescent at that age. I didn't hit puberty until 14 myself.

At any rate, I don't think there's an official line dividing what constitutes pedophilia. If the child is still young and undeveloped, the person attracted to them is basically attracted to child-like characteristics in someone who is a child. After all, some girls get their periods at age nine, and I would still say someone who lusted after them is a pedophile. The term is applicable, anyway, to someone who isn't in adolescence, so for simplicity's sake, at very least an actual teenager.

didn't hit puberty as in, didn't have a period, or NO body changes at all? no new body hair, no growth spurt, no voice change, no breast buds, nothing?

I mean, if a person still basically appears as a child then it'd be pedophilia for an adult to be into them but I guess my understanding is it's pretty uncommon in developed nations for 13yo girls to still be 100% prepubescent. If you're just talking about menarche then yeah that is a lot more varied.

The age thing and student/teacher dynamic is absent though.

I'm no fan of either myself, but Snape/Hermione is undeniably more fucked up.
