snape is a douche and their relationship would totally be terrible but that's what I like about it tbh. people can pry this ship from my cold, dead hands.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
And yet Malfoy/Hermione is (for the most part) accepted even though Malfoy referred to her with bigoted slurs and wished for her death on numerous occasions.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it? I think if Draco/Hermione is more accepted it's because people can forgive Draco's shitty-ass behavior as a 12 year old more than Snape's bullshit at 35.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I mean, a douchey kid being a douche... or douchey man who is also a pedophile. I'm not surprised one is more accepted than the other.

The age thing and student/teacher dynamic is absent though.

I'm no fan of either myself, but Snape/Hermione is undeniably more fucked up.

*shrugs* HP Fandom is full of pairings like that.

I support the fact that you like your ship without the urge to justify yourself for doing so.

I get so baffled anytime I see someone condemn themself for liking a character or ship some part of fandom views as "problematic". And the way some of these people depend on the approval of other fans for continuing liking their thing. ("Omg I ship x/y am I a horrible person for doing so?!? Am I allowed to like character x they are so horrible?!?")

It's just fandom, not reality. The majority of people see the difference and those who don't have a huge pile of problems beside of it anyway.

(And just for the record, I'm not a Snape/Hermoine shipper myself, I'm neutral towards it.)

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen anyone say here that liking a certain ship is bad. We regularly brag about our "problematic" ships or favorite characters. But there's a difference between liking a ship because of its fucked-up dynamic, and denying a "bad" dynamic exists at all. If someone said Snape/Hermoine was romantic and cute and sweet, that's when I'd think people would start objecting. idk I saw the wank last week (?) and I still think you're exaggerating how much people care about who ships what. I never get complaints that whine about how F!S supposedly loses its shit about something, but it's really just the normal level of snark that we give all secrets.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well people did kinda flip their shit about it but that was because someone said that Snape reminded them of their one true love and how perfect he is or something like that

A friend of mine a couple years back was excited on watching A:TLA, because she wanted to see Azula/Zuko fic in which Azula is crazy, rapey, and abusive, playing manipulative mind games with her brother for her own twisted gratification. (i.e. fucking canon Azula) Instead, the few fics she was able to find were all angsty woobie shit about how only his sister can understand his wounded soul or some crap.

I think usually people are getting up in arms because unlike you, instead of going 'I know it's problematic, that's why I like it/I like it anyway' a lot of times there's at least one anon going 'They're the only ones who would understand eachother and it's so romantic!' and that tends to put people on the defensive.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I worry when people act like creepy stuff that is illegal irl is the best ship ever. You wonder sometimes about who's thinking that way, and hope they don't do it irl.

It's not problematic.

Stop using that word wrong. Problematic is for things that are, on their own, not an issue but when part of a pattern start making a troubling picture.

One short story that happens to be about three white guys is not bad. There's nothing bad about a story that's just about white guys. When thousands and thousands of stories are being published in various media and they're ALL about white guys, it's problematic. It's a very good, very useful term.

It is not a catch all for "the canon dynamics of these two people have a greater possibility of unhealthy interpretations in fanworks."

Sheesh, you're one of those people who want to pop up with disclaimers that Hannibal fans need to put tons of disclaimers that romanticizing cannibalism is ~*PrObLaMaTiC*~ and Hannibal should not be allowed to depict eating people as appealing.

I despise this ship with every particle of my being, but I have zero problem with people who ship it while knowing and admitting how messed up it is. You do you friend. It's the people who try to justify it as being super special awesome and romantic and totally having no issues at all that skeeve me out.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-28 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Snape *is* an awful person.

Why would he even date Hermione, when he would bag on her for being a "know-it-all" and then indirectly insulted her teeth and made her cry?

That's not even touching the way he shat on Harry and Neville.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
lol

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Snape was a hero who died to save the wizarding world. Harry named his son in part after him as dedication to his bravery and selflessness. Check yourself.

I still think it's gross af and pretty insulting to both of their characters.

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care what people ship. And Snape is not my thing. But from the way Snape threads often blow up here in FS, I'd say the super-fans and the super-haters are both united in the fact that they identify way too much with the character. Either because the way he was treated reminds them of something that happened to them, or the way he treats others reminds them of something that happened to them. So there is often a whole lot of not-entirely-rational discourse that swirls around the character.

HP was my first fandom and this was the ship I read the most of way back when. I'm only barely in the HP fandom these days (I read Draco/Harry occasionally), but whenever I see a secret about this ship, I think, "What about Snarry?"

(Anonymous) 2016-02-29 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Snape wank has been so common if f!s lately.

I wish I knew photoshop. I would make a manip of this (http://echoba.se/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Brain.png) with Snape's face over the lady's and wank instead of brain.

Eat it, F!S.
