Dredd

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I just watched this movie and I liked it. Not sure if I'd like the comics. I wanted to see more of the world, especially the iso-cubes and the day-to-day part of the Judges lives. I also have strong feelings about that poor tech guy. I really liked Anderson too.

Oooooo tell me you're thoughts about tech guy (who is now famous for being General Hux in TFA)! Look, he got tortured so good. It was hot, ngl.

You know, I can get down for torture porn with the best of them (Criminal Minds this week was great) but in this case, I felt way too much empathy for him. He really sold how traumatic and scared he was, and I felt so bad for him. I wanted to wrap him in a blanket, feed him soup, and give him a hug.

And then throw him in a threeway with Dredd and Anderson.

Watchmen

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I just rewatched this and personally I think it's a good movie. Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach is flawless casting, imo.

Ooo, I liked the Watchmen film too. (Even bought the ultimate edition.)

The only thing I truly object to is the ending; wish they hadn't changed bits of that, but I still find it to be a good adaption. The cast was amazing.

ayrt

I read the comic a while ago, and can't actually remember how the end differs from the movie!

The whole cast really was great. I've been shipping the hell out of Nite Owl/Rorschach recently, and there's a surprising amount of good fic for that pairing.

I liked it a lot. I'd have liked it more if it wasn't the super censored TBS version. I'm not familiar with the comic though.

Haley WAS flawless as Rorschach. And surprisingly, an adorable sweetie of a man in real life!

I also think it's good. Not amazing, but a good adaptation of a dense, complicated comic.

This movie was freaking fantastic. The change to the ending was ok, not great but ok, but the whole movie was like a perfect adaptation.

Showgirls

(Anonymous) 2016-03-05 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Showgirls is not a bad movie. Really not. Sometimes I get the urge to sit as many people as I can in a theater and make them watch it while listening to me explain how each scene is just so fantastic.

Sorry, I know that wank is cold... just needed to vent.

"each scene is just so fantastic"

I've seen this movie several times and I have to strongly disagree. Very strongly. If you mean fantastic in the so-bad-it's-good I can sort of see where you're coming from, but at best that movie is mediocre to my eyes.

I'm happy for you that you enjoy it and I hope you can find someone to watch it with who likes it just as much though.

Look, everyone says it's "so bad it's good" but usually they don't deliver on the "bad" part. Except for over the top tits and ass which is the bloody point... so would you indulge me and tell me what you think is bad about the movie?

Wank? Isn't this kind of a classic film?

It's a classic film people like to call "bad".

We watched Pulp Fiction and Desperados last night. I'd last seen PF 20 years ago and Desperados not at all, so it was a fun time. Reservoir Dogs is a great film but I think it's Pulp Fiction where Tarantino really found his voice as a filmmaker.

Desperados is also a great film; it's a slightly less slapstick take on El Mariachi, but I don't know how anyone could mistake it for anything except a comedy. There's a guy who fucking dials a phone with a knife for Christ's sake. It and El Mariachi are pretty obviously parodies of Mexican gangster films, and I really dig them.

Pulp Fiction has the best use of dramatic irony I've seen in film. At first, I had no idea why it was out of chronological order. Then I saw the death of a certain character, and I thought "Oh. That's why." All that arguing over religion and whether to stay in the business, and hanging over it that one of them's about to die for his choice . . .

Re: Movies

Watch once upon a time in mexico! It's the best within the mariachi trilogy (though desperado is a soft reboot...)
The genre has been dubbed "mexploitation" if you did't know, and I can also recommend "Machete" which is just as crazy. Gotta love Robert Rodriguez.
(On a related note I've come to like the movies of Fatih Akin for their similar approach to peripheral culture, though he's doing "Türksploitation", which makes much more sense in the context of my own country. But when I watched "Soul Kitchen" I realized why I had no problem understanding the dynamics behind Rodriguez' mexploitation films.)

I plan to watch it eventually! Once a month we have Grindhouse Nights where we watch Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez films, two per night. We've only just started (last month was Reservoir Dogs/El Mariachi) so Once Upon A Time In Mexico will likely be later in the year.

Next month is Four Rooms and From Dusk 'til Dawn :)

Fatih Akin is really something. I've seen two of his movies.

And every time I see his name, I read it as "Faith Akin."

Both great movies!

The Martian

(Anonymous) 2016-03-06 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I bought The Martian on amazon (after having seen it in theatres) on the theory that it would be a good sick day movie, and now I have a back ache from doing something wrong at the gym AND period cramps, so I'm about to pop it in and test that theory.

Is it out yet? I kind of want to see it now too. I didn't care before but it looks kind of cute and the furry wank made me morbidly curious.
