Not my cuppa, but I don't get the hate for it, either.

Funny how you don't see as much hate for Snarry, which, let's be honest, ain't a paragon of in-character-ness.

I can only assume it's a kneejerk reaction to there being a female in the picture, because she can ONLY be an avatar for the reader to indulge in their sinful lust for Snape. It's not like she's a canon character with a personality or something. Stupid horny fangirls amirite.

She doesn't HAVE to be an avatar, but that's how she's written in 90% of Snermione fics.

So, how many have you read?

Anon here who has read quite a bit of Snermione (not because I ship it, because I've been in fandom for a long time) and ayrt is on point. Many of the Snape/Hermione you find out there are from the school of Snape-apologist-to-the=point-of-sheer-crazy thought who don't actually have a fitting avatar in canon and don't want the stigma that comes with an OC, so they settle on Hermione as the next best thing to be their in-story mouthpiece.

In fairness, I suspect it would be Luna if we knew more about her and she was as big a presence in the canon as Hermione is. As it stands though, making Luna their mouthpiece would run the risk of being called out for extreme OOC, because at least with Hermione you canonically have the whole mini-SJW stands up for lost causes thing they can play on.

To be even fairer, Harry is often the slash equivalent of this in Snarry fic, so it's not like they just limit it to Hermione. Although with Snarry you get a lot more self-flagellating because, well, it's Harry, he's the focus of a huge portion of all Snape's shit, so of course he has to realize how completely wrong he is and how utterly deserving of Snape's treatment he is and etc.

I don't know you, but that you're this defensive basically proves that you imagine you're either Hermione or Harry when you read Snermione or Snarry.

Let's be honest, she's the author's avatar in most shippy fic featuring her. The more OOC, the more she's a stand-in for the typist.

Absolutely agree, and the same goes for Snarry, where Harry stands in for the one-handed typist.

Don't even get me started on the Hermione-or-Harry-gets-raped-by-all-death-eaters-at-an-orgy trope.

I know, those silly girls. Slashers would never use a male character as a self-insert.

I've read enough Sirius/Remus to know that's a goddamned lie.

I've seen a lot more hate for Snarry than I ever have for SS/HG. In part because there was a lot of creepy adult/prepubescent child fic for the ship back in the day.

The SS/HG hate's persisted longer because the fans of it have been loud and intrusive for longer, that's all.

You think so? I always felt like SSHG fans stayed in their own lane.

Depends on the forum, maybe. A lot of the ones I've interacted with have been prone to leaping in and insisting that their ship is the superior Hermione ship because Snape and Hermione are "on the same level". Or that Snape deserves Hermione because she won't "betray" him like Lily did.

Fair enough, I've seen some of that too.

God, there were really creepy Snarry fics everywhere for a while. Like, there were multiple fics based on the premise of Snape kidnapping/rescuing Harry from the Dursleys when he was anywhere between the ages of 3 and 11 that ended in them fucking sometime during seventh year. Those fics also were big on the Trio hate and the Weasley hate. Hermione or Mrs. Weasley occasionally cottoned on to what was going on and called Wizard Child Protective Services, and were portrayed as evil, jealous hags for doing so.

I mean how dare they report some creep who was grooming a little kid so he could finally fuck said kid when he became legal.

There probably would be if Snarry shippers constantly made defensive secrets about their fucked up ship.

Were people actively ~hating~ SSHG before the secrets started? I don't see Snarry shippers going around saying "our ship is really in character, honest."

The only thing that will rile me enough to argue my case is Tumblr-style Snape-hate, accusations that shippers are pedophiles (glances upthread in disgust), or the insistence that Snape is old and ugly and The Actual Worst, and therefore no one should ship him.

Or, on reddit, that Snape and/or Harry is totally canonically straight and how dare you stupid fangirls make him/them homosexual.

Otherwise I'm with the OP in my massive cringe reaction to seeing fan art or manips based on the movie actors. Nooooooooooooo.

I don't even read Snape fic, and that stuff bothers the hell out of me, too. I'm surprised Snape-hating anon hasn't shown up yet in this thread to remind everyone what a big meanie he is.

I like Snarry and I don't care if the art is realistic, though I really don'r look at much of it.
