I've tried to read a few highly-recced fics featuring that ship, because a good friend of mine was really into it and I wanted to know what she saw in it.

Reading those fics definitely didn't leave me finding the ship less OOC.

Was introduced to fandom because my best friend wrote it. Her fic was a juggernaut back when. The Hermione in the fic was just an idealized version of my friend, and nothing like book Hermione at all. tl;dr: Fandom always projects like an IMAX.

yeeeeaaaah i like some of the fic but actor-realistic art freaks me out a bit. esp because while Rickman was marvelous as Snape, he was quite a bit older than the character.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Unlike book-Snape who is only 20 years older than her.

For me this goes for every character in HP -- none of the actors look anything like what I had in mind (except for McGonagall, Dumbledore and maybe Hagrid), so I never picture them as their actors when I read fics and I avoid fanarts made to look like the actors.

Which makes me annoyed at 'short!Harry' depictions in fics (along with conventionally pretty!Hermione). He's lanky like James in my head (though not as tall as Ron), and physical descriptions in fics would some times take me out of it. I mean, if those fix authors stick to Radcliffe's height, they should stick to Radcliffe's eye colour too, no?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Have rarely met a description of Harry that didn't throw me out of the fic tbh, you get everything from DanRad!Harry to giant burly, broad-shouldered muscled!Harry which is even more ooc (does Seeker build mean nothing to anyone anymore?)

I'll admit though, the descriptions get more accurate if you avoid Dark Lord Potter fics and certain ships.

I always assumed Harry should be short because of early childhood malnutrition, tbh. Long before the movies.

I've read a lot of Snape/Hermione fic, and yes, it's OOC. Hermione doesn't hate her friends as much as the shippers do, hun.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, that's why I could never get into it.

Oh good, our weekly Snape/Hermione shipping secret has arrived.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with having a bdsm age-difference kink, daddy fantasies, teacher student fantasies etc., but projecting like this onto a kids' book series smells of desperation. Go post original fic and self-inserts on literotica ffs.

So am I the only one who thinks that picture looks like anti-semitic propaganda? Like "Watch out for the jew, they're coming for our schoolgirls"

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. You are.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
...yes. Pretty sure you're the only one.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think much anti-semitic propaganda was sex-related, it was mostly about jews coming for your money and shit.

HOWEVER, I believe germans actually used to gives tons of "demoralizing" leaflets to Americans and British during WWI (or WWII? Can't remember) to convince them that while they were fighting, their wives were fucking their bosses and neighbors every night and they'd better go AWOL right now and go back to her before she gets pregnant or leaves you, and IIRC some of those had a lot of anti-semitism in them.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
lol.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
OP: YOU ARE SO RIGHT.

Which kind of makes me wonder about how much JKR was influenced (subconsciously!!) by antisemitic villain traditions. Canonical descriptions of Snape always struck me as othered, including his "sallow" skin tone -- he's not just pale, but yellow-ish. And historically, antisemitic propaganda also turns Jews into a scapegoat for pretty much everything that befell society, from the Black Death to economic turmoil. And Snape's pretty much the number one scapegoat of the series....

I feel the same way about most live action characters, actually! It's ridiculously creepy to draw porn of the actual actors.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Not my cuppa, but I don't get the hate for it, either.

Funny how you don't see as much hate for Snarry, which, let's be honest, ain't a paragon of in-character-ness.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I can only assume it's a kneejerk reaction to there being a female in the picture, because she can ONLY be an avatar for the reader to indulge in their sinful lust for Snape. It's not like she's a canon character with a personality or something. Stupid horny fangirls amirite.

I've seen a lot more hate for Snarry than I ever have for SS/HG. In part because there was a lot of creepy adult/prepubescent child fic for the ship back in the day.

The SS/HG hate's persisted longer because the fans of it have been loud and intrusive for longer, that's all.

There probably would be if Snarry shippers constantly made defensive secrets about their fucked up ship.

Ugh. Why do people do this realistic fanart shit? Even worst is pasting actors heads on bodies doing lewd things and photoshopping the fuck out of it. It NEVER looks good.
