I'm like ten years late to the party, but I just powered through Gankutsuou and goddamn. Goddamn. What a great series. I'm totally blown away.

Holds the distinction of actually making me feel something for the Count, which is something the book didn't manage.

I've heard of it before but don't know anything about it. What was great about it, without spoiling it? I have a free weekend!

Not OP, but I thought it was a brilliant decision to have the viewpoint character be someone who's inextricably caught up in the conflict without knowing why. The less you know about the source material, the more surprises it will pull off as he figures out what's really going on. I also loved the parallels between the two generations of characters.

Feo above me there covered one of the things I loved most about it: the PoV character is the perfect one to choose, and seeing things through his eyes makes everything seem so intriguing and mysterious.

Also the characters are all really well-rounded and interesting, which is impressive considering that it's a pretty extensive cast list.

The art style is astonishing, and while I think sometimes it uses the wild colors/textures as a crutch (and the CG is unfortunately quite dated), I never got tired of looking at it.

It's honestly really wonderful! I hope you give it a shot. :D

I love Gankutsuou. I actually only read the book because I love the anime so much, and I was surprised by how close the anime actually stayed to its plot in many places. I always thought it was one of those "very loosely based on" deals.

I like most of the characters better in the anime, too. Though I wish they'd kept Eugenie's storyline somewhat more like the original. (I heard they were going to at first, but something about time constraints made them end up having to scrap Louise's character.)

I was definitely a bit disappointed over Eugenie (or, rather, Louise), but I honestly fell so much in love with her as a character that I couldn't bring myself to be too mad. I could see what they were going for (using Albert and Eugenie to, in a way, mirror Edmond and Mercedes), but admittedly I could have done without the childhood love angle.

Still, I felt like the ending was open enough that you could assume she'd met her Louise at the conservatory. :D

I loved how it focused on an outsider PoV. It made the Count's schemes even more thrilling and danerous. The style is also an interesting experiment. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

The ending is the weakest part of the series which is disappointing, but overall I really enjoyed it.

Yes, seeing things from Albert's point of view really brought the whole story into perspective for me. The Count became such an intriguing character because of it; seeing all that opulence and raw sensuality that just swept the poor boy right under was amazing.

Agreed on the style! It was such an interesting use of color and texture, though I did notice that occasionally it seemed to be trying to distract from mediocre lineart or animation. It was sort of come-and-go, though; some scenes were beautifully animated.

The ending was sort of hot and cold for me for sure-- I really loved some parts of it, and really disliked other parts of it. I see what it was going for (love can be just as cruel as hate, they both come from the same place, etc.), but it was a bit over the top, haha.

It is a very pretty and very well done show.
(On another note - if you liked the style and have not already seen it, you might want to give Mononoke a try (it's a series, not the Princess Mononoke movie). Slightly different genre, but also really great and stylistically similar to Gankutsuou.

I've heard of that one, but I've never actually seen it! I'll have to check that out. What's the genre like?

It's a supernatural/mystery show with several story arcs - 12 episodes, if I remember correctly, and 5 stories/tales. It's a wandering Medicine seller with some supernatural skills who travels around searching for Mononoke/evil spirits and has to determine their form and the reason why they exist before he can slay them. The stories also take place during different Japanese time periods, from Heian over Edo to Taishô/Shôwa (1920s) - it's very interesting (and so, so pretty).

Hah, this is very true. The book felt like a retelling of events but doesn't really make you feel much for the characters. Also I'm still buttblasted about youknowwho dying. Damn, that one hurt. Also some other stuff I wasn't fond of, but remove that and it's a really good series.

I AM DEFINITELY BUTTBLASTED ABOUT THAT. I kind of saw the point of it, but still. Ugh. D:

But yeah, I think starting the anime at the Count and Albert's meeting then filling in the details as it unfolded was brilliant. It felt a lot more naturally paced, and allowed you get swept up in what was happening as well as what had happened.
