Any Cosplayers?

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking of cosplaying at a convention later this year. But I've never actually done it before, and am kinda intimidated.

The actual costuming part of it won't be too hard; I sew.

It's just all the rest of it. How do I carry off the character's confidence? Should I even try for the character's accent?

How serious do you want to get about it? Some people try to do the whole character along with the acting. Other people just want pretty costumes. It's up to you.

Confidence? Accent?

Cosplaying is literally just wearing the costume, I don't think most people actually "role-play" while wearing the costume. The only time you might want to try to match the character's "confidence" would be in photos, assuming you want to take more serious character photos and not just fun silly convention photos.

Good luck!

This, the role-players are the vast minority and usually doing it as parts of group acts or for videos.

+1

been cosplaying for 17 years, never roleplayed.

don't worry about confidence or accents. Just be you. Enjoy the costume, and when someone screams your character's name, smile. When someone asks for a photo, pose like the character poses in canon. The rest of the time, enjoy yourself. Have a snack, buy some shit in the dealer's room, take photos, play some games.

I personally find the confidence doesn't come too hard once your in it. After all, you aren't YOU anymore. You might have a different experience, but I reccomend losing yourself in it if you can go that route. After all, YOU are the one worried about confidence, not them. Kinda the same way halloween works. That said, worry less about being accurate and more about having fun.

Agreed! It's like how Halloween feels. You're not the only one in a costume, so even if you're shy, you get comfortable pretty quick. I definitely get a lot more confident once I'm in the costume, too.

I've been to cons and the only time cosplayers acted in character was on scene, during the cosplay competition.

Ex-cosplayer here.

The acting part is really what makes a good cosplay. If you're not up to the task, you shouldn't really be cosplaying at a Con. It's perfectly acceptable to make a costume specifically for a photoshoot without wanting to interact, but the reason you walk the halls at a Con is to show off how well you know the character and their mannerisms.

One thing I'll say though, is even if you're a shy person irl it really helps to be in costume. You usually look different enough that most people won't immediately recognize you out of costume, so when I've cosplayed I've felt much more confident by virtue of that small degree of anonymity. Plus, people love it when you can act like their favorite character irl. They go nuts. It's a huge ego boost, and even if you start out shaky you can usually get really into it by the end of the day.

JFC, stop tying to tell people how to fandom.

Learn to read. I'm not telling people how to fandom, I'm telling them what makes a good "floor" cosplayer.

I even fucking said in the post that it's fine to do other things, but seriously if your intent is to wander the Con halls and you don't want people to interact with you (ie. ask for poses, ask you to do a specific yell, ask for in-character photos), then you're in the wrong place.

You just told someone they shouldn't be doing something, so...????

I also tried to cover the bases by saying that cosplaying for photoshoots is totally fine. Yes, photoshoots happen at Cons, I'm aware.

But 90% of the day if you're cosplaying at a Con you're walking the halls or the dealer's room or sitting in panels (or if you're an artist you're at a table, but I assumed OP was not).
