Expressions that bug you

Words or expressions everyone uses that you don't like for some (rational or irrational) reason
mine below

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger"

There are some cases where this is true but so many where it isn't

"Keep your eyes peeled"

Gross

sometimes what doesn't kill you can still fuck you up real good.

I hate the expression "to pass (on)" for when someone dies. I mean, is it because I'm not a native speaker of english? To me it sounds a) really kitschy and b) like you're implicitly saying that they have "passed on to another plane/a better place/heaven", which negates the dying part and implies believing in an afterlife. So I get why people who believe in these things would say it, but professed sceptics and atheists? I don't get it. And it's really EVERYWHERE and in every conversation about someone dying.

Now, "to pass away" I can live with, but I still find it too metaphorical and kitschy, because it means "to walk/go away", and someone who dies does not just walk somewhere.

I agree with this. I do believe in an afterlife. But if you don't, why would you use the phrase? It does really seem to imply that you are passing on to something.

It's everywhere because it is a commonly used phrase and has survived from older more religious generations to today. I like that connection with the past.

imo the reason pass on/away is so prevalent is because it's less direct than "they died" so it feels more polite and/or sympathetic. I think other languages have similar expressions for the same reasons.

As someone who DOESN'T believe in an afterlife, I tend to say it among certain company out of politeness, because I know certain people do believe in an afterlife and are the type to say things like "He passed" and can get kind of uncomfortable when people just say "he died" because apparently that sounds almost like you're being disrespectful of the dead somehow. What I'm saying is, the chances I'm going to offend people by saying "passed on" are a lot lower than the chances I might offend someone by saying "died" because people who don't like "passed on" (like me) just find it kind of annoying and not an offense against the dead.

"Beat around the bush" because of one time when I was trying to figure out how we put together such a phrase, all I could come up with was it was a sexual reference. Like, a guy having sex with a woman, but not quite actually penetrating her. idk I was convinced for a long time that's what it meant. I am pretty sure someone told me a different origin of the phrase but I can't remember and the phrase still bugs me. lol

Also, curiosity killed the cat, because I like cats.

Probably to do with hunting. Beaters used to try and scare game out of the undergrowth.

Glorified (as in calling something a "glorified" whatever) It's stupid but I've mostly seen it used in the most obnoxious ways by a lot of really pretentious people.

Chill.

"We were sitting there, chill."

"We're chill."

"I'm going to keep it chill."

Just...stop saying chill!

The word "creepy" has lost all meaning and impact for me at this point due to overusage.

When someone is describing a character and says they "don't take shit from no one". It just makes me think they're really obnoxious.

I can't stand pithy business aphorisms and slang. Business-speak is some of the most empty language there is. It's one of the top 5 reasons why I'll never work in a traditional office. It's probably why I found Louis Bloom's repeated use of it in place of real conversation in Nightcrawler so unsettling, because it was obvious he had nothing else to say.

I also really can't stand a lot of the coded language and terminology the right-wing uses. Part of this is because I'm aware of the tactics the right uses to control the discussion and frame every issue from their perspectives, and part of it is because I'm surrounded by people who vomit this shit out of their mouths every day. Roosh V provides a good example, though I suspect he's committing a faux pas here by talking about Right Club.

Even when I was very devoutly religious I hated the saying, "God never gives you more than you can handle" (and its cousin, "Everything happens for a reason."). FIRST of all, even if (a) you believe in God, and (b) believe life's hardships are things God gives you, the millions of people who commit suicide every year is direct evidence refuting this. SECONDOFLY, it's meant as a comfort and most people have good intentions when they say it, but it's a shitty thing to say to someone who is not doing well at handling their crisis. Why, yes, let's tell the woman whose son has just been murdered or the man about to lose his house that God (all-good, all-loving) has deliberately given them this trauma, and with the confidence that they can handle it, too! IMO, saying anything that states or implies that a person's suffering is deliberately imposed on them by some higher power (God/fate/luck, etc) is a dick move.

Oh yeah, and I also hate "it's a no-brainer". Stupid on every level.

Mostly Christian sayings:

God works/moves in mysteries ways.
It's all part of God's plan. (God's plan was to give my dog cancer? Fuck that guy, then.)
God never gives you more than you can handle.
Get right with God.
Let Jesus take the wheel.

Especially in reference to a death:

God needed them more than we did. (Fuck that shit right in the eye sockets.)
They're in a better place now. (Again, fuck that.)

Unless you're intersex, nobody "designates" you as anything at birth. Doctors note your biological sex, they don't artificially assign you a gender.
