Fingernail biting tips? (inspired by yesterday's secret)

(Anonymous) 2016-03-12 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
That LOTR nail-biting secret yesterday made me really feel motivated to kick my nail-biting habit. So I was wondering - does anyone have any tips for how to quit biting one's nails? Any ex-nail-biters here who have strategies that worked for you?

Keep them cut short.

I mean, there are a bunch of things you can paint on your nails that supposedly taste bad and stop you from biting them but those things never worked for me. It's way easier just to clip them all the time

Paint your fingernails with bitter almond. It has a 100% success rate at stopping chewing...one way or another.

Honestly, my mom uses this nail polish specifically made to taste disgusting to keep her from biting their nails. She also paints her nails every so often to give her more incentive not to ruin the pretty designs she makes, haha.

For me, there have been two things that have worked in curbing it.

1) Trying to replace biting or picking behaviors with just sort of... like, friction behaviors? In other words, when I get the urge, I just try to do something that is not actually biting or picking. Like just sort of touching the area in question to kind of remind myself.

2) Address underlying anxieties. This is prob the best thing to do.

I do #1! I keep my nails very nicely polished and sort of make a habit of rubbing one of my fingers over the polished surface of another finger's nail to feel how smooth it is, instead of biting.

It also has the added benefit of making me more aware of how nice my nail is, and more reluctant to ruin the nail's nice polish job by biting it.

A family friend told me a story about a friend of hers who bit his nails and got a really gross bacterial infection that went all the way up to his elbow. I stopped DEAD the moment I heard that story.

So...if you're brave enough, maybe google image search for "nail biting infection" or something?

Protect one nail. Out of your ten nails, make one that you will not bite. Pamper that nail. Let it grow long, shape it, trim it, polish it (and use hardening lacquer!), look at how pretty it is. See how useful it is in opening and manipulating objects.

Expand to two nails. Now there are two out of ten nails that are protected. Chew on the other eight, but not these two. Make them so nice-looking that it would be a crying shame to wreck them by chewing on them.

Expand to three nails that are protected...you see where I'm going with this.

For me, I would bite my fingernails when they would start to chip or fray because I couldn't stand the way they caught on things. Once I started, I'd bite them down to bleeding. My solution was emery board. I keep nail files in my purse and in every room in my house. Anywhere I spend a lot of time (like at my computer desk) has a nail file within easy reach. And there's one on my nightstand. A nail file is one of my must-haves whenever I go anywhere but some are small enough to fit in a pocket so it's never a big deal.

That's what's worked for me. I just file away the chips and fray before they become big. Still working on not making my toenails bleed but I haven't bitten my nails in years.

I find nail wraps are harder to bite through than just polish, which never worked for me. I still nibble, but don't do much damage before I can stop myself.
