It took me a stupidly long amount of time to realize that there's a dude leaning over and kissing a baby. I kept seeing a butt.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-21 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
This pic was recently featured in a buzzed post. Nearly everybody sees the butt before finding the face.

SAAAME

It didn't take me that long (mostly because context I think, if the baby hadn't been there it probably would have taken longer) but that is not a good angle for that gentleman

(Anonymous) 2016-03-21 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, seriously. I didn't see the dude until I read your comment and went back to look again.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-21 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I will comment not on the butt picture and on the actual secret.

I agree in general, but I think there is a line. If the name sounds like it could be a rl name - as in, somewhat similar to a real life name, then I don't really mind. Or if it's after an existing, say, plant or mineral that isn't currently a "normal" name, but considering plants/minerals make for popular names in general, I wouldn't be mad.

Pikachu would be pretty hard to justify though. Apparently that's actually an issue in Japan, lol.

Eh, considering Wendy was popularized by Peter Pan, as long as it's not too stupid I think it's alright.

I had to stare at that image for way too long before I realised it wasn't someone's ass...

But as far as the secret goes I sort of agree, like I don't think they're the worst parents in the world but I do tend to think they're not really thinking about the kid if they give them some really out-there character name.

That being said there are character names that can totally work as regular names, my oldest niece is named after a GoT character but because it's a name that exists irl it works.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Just googled this and it's true, people are actually naming their children Pikachu in Japan. And Tetris too.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
That is a very unfortunate picture.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Tbh I would personally much rather have a name like that than my actual extremely common name. It sucks when you're in a class in college and there are so many other people with your name that the professor has to start appending numbers to it to identify people.

It took me a minute to figure out the picture. I thought it was some weird photobomb or something.

Most of those names aren't so bad. Like Kal-El can be shortened to Kal, I believe Goku is a legit name (and it IS better than Kakarot), and Daenerys can be shortened to Dan or Dane, depending on how you would pronounce that name. I've got nothing for Pikachu though.

I always wonder if the people who gripe about this realize just how many common names were either popularized or created by fiction writers in previous generations.

There are some names that would be ridiculous to give to a child, but as long as the name sounds like something an actual human might reasonably have, it's not horrible to give it to a child.

What about kids who get fandom names unintentionally? Almost had a cousin named Vincent Tyler until I pointed out that this was the name of the main char in Queer as Folk. Almost wish I hadn't.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Lord of the Rings names had a vogue with hippies in the late 60s and early 70s (my generation). I went to college with an Arwen who really liked her name and was proud of it. Second generation fan nerd. I also had a friend whose middle name was Nichelle, after Nichelle Nichols - second generation Black SF fan - she was proud of it too.

I have a friend named Tepring, same name as Spock's chosen bride in Star Trek TOS. And she knows other Teprings and T'Prings. My friends and I think it's awesome, especially since only TruFans will get the reference and others just think it's a unique name.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-22 01:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It really depends on how well the name fits in the culture where you/the baby lives, I think.

As an example, the name Hermione was more or less totally unknown in Norway before the Harry Potter books happened. (Yes, many of us really did think it was pronounced "Hermy-own" until Rowling gave us the real pronunciation :D). The translator (Torstein Bugge Høverstad, awesome skills on that guy!) decided to use the German name Hermine, which was an extremely uncommon in Norway at the time... but which has become quite common amongst kids of a certain age. It "fits in", as it were.

(See also Ronja, Birk, Malin - and blame Astrid Lindgren. :D)
