Anyone seen the new batman film yet? Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Its not great. Both Adams’ Lois Lane and Diane Lane’s Martha Kent are serial victims, Holly Hunter’s potentially sparky role as a senator prepared to stand up to Luthor never coheres, and until the big finish, Gadot isn't called on to do much but slink. It’s male power fantasy packed with meathead orthodoxy, and it really leaves you wondering if Mad Max: Fury Road and Star Wars: The Force Awakens actually happened.

I haven't seen it, but that sounds like what everyone else is saying about it. It's nothing new or fun, only bloated sfx and pointless drama.

OT: That description is generic enough to not spoil anything for me fwiw. Thanks for the warning anyway.

Haven't seen it, but the ratings on RottenTomatoes are not great. I'm still sitting on the fence, trying to decide whether to shell out the money (because I like special effects extravaganzas), or wait for it to hit one of the cheaper theaters (because I'm also cheap).

Can you tell me how it was bad without all the gender bullshit and faux intellectualism?

Not OP but to parse it down, it's loaded with old tired tropes, has a messy story, and doesn't do anything interesting or unexpected.

Here's the plot, as related by Moviebob, so spoilers ahoy

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Lex Luthor dislikes superheroes because reasons and he hates Superman most of all. So when he finds out that Batman is also mad at Superman because people who worked for Batman got killed during the ending of MAN OF STEEL he undertakes a ridiculously complicated master plan to goad Batman into killing Superman that involves the triggering of a Benghazi-esque foreign policy disaster in North Africa, the staging of a suicide-bombing during a United States Congressional hearing and a jar of piss (I’m not even kidding, a MAJOR plot-point of this movie involves a jar of Lex Luthor’s piss.) Except Lex didn’t really need to go to all that trouble because Batman already wants to kill Superman because he had a psychic nightmare about Darkseid except Darkseid was played by Evil Superman and also The Flash (I think?) popped out of a time portal and yelled at him about Lois Lane. Who herself then gets kidnapped by Lex Luthor along with Superman’s mom in order to force Superman to attack Batman whom Lex has also tricked into building kryptonite weapons and the anti-Superman battle suit from THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS so maybe he actually can kill Superman. But even if he can’t it doesn’t matter because Lex has also used alien science-magic to turn the body of General Zod into Doomsday whose stronger than both of them put together. Fortunately it turns out a mysterious lady whom Batman had been flirting with earlier in the movie is actually Wonder Woman, who shows up at the very end of the movie to punch Doomsday multiple times, buying Superman the opportunity to use Batman’s kryptonite weapons to kill Doomsday but then also get killed himself. With Superman now dead, Batman and Wonder Woman decide to invent The Justice League in case anything like Doomsday ever happens again or if Batman’s weird nightmares come true somehow. Also, yes really Superman is dead."

Wait. Is that true about Superman dying???

Is there a less silly plot summary around I can read?

Considering Gal Gadot is a shitty choice for WW I am glad she won't be in there all that much. At least when she is slinking around, I dont have to pretend that bean pole could care more than 30 pounds in her arms.

DA

She's pro-Israel so I won't be seeing it, but I agree with you that she's a bad choice all around.

Like I said the other day, it's still going to make a gazillion bucks, and I'm still enjoying every critic tearing it to shreds meanwhile. Maybe with the second and third weekend earnings taking a possible dive, WB will reconsider the direction they're taking with their 'verse.

I feel like they invested so much money into the DC cinematic universe and have already filmed and cast upcoming films WB will refuse to admit that they need to make changes with what they've done to DCU. At least, not huge changes.

Also, given that there are a lot of people making comparisons between MCU and DCU in films, and Marvel's been given so much praise, any knocks on DC is a blow to them. I think they're afraid to acknowledge any criticism as well, because that's admitting that they're not as good as Marvel.

I don't know. On the one hand, I feel bad for DC because it seems like they're stuck between a rock and a hard place. But on the other hand, the WB/DC movie execs seem to have no grasp on reality and have their heads so far shoved up their own asses.

Not great is putting it mildly. That is a fan's way of trying to gild the turd. It is bad. It is flat out bad, and no amount of trying to be tactful will change it.

it's pretty bad but if it produces some batman/superman hatesex then at least it'll be good for something (...ignore the fact that hatesex with superman would probably end in your pelvis being shattered. they'd figure it out)

Batman uses his Kryptonite prince albert to prevent the pelvic shattering.

Haven't seen it, but I'm wondering... does anyone actually enjoy blockbuster films? Seems like all I ever hear is fans complaining about them.

Sure, there's nothing wrong with blockbusters in and of themselves. Their impact on the industry is pretty negative right now and of course a lot of them are objectively shit, but there's good ones out there.

Wow, it's like it's a Zack Snyder movie or something.

But seriously, disappointing to hear from so many people that this film is so badly made, but not surprising at all.

tbh i liked it. i agree, the woman saving thing is a large problem in comics or perhaps in movies in general. didnt deadpool have the same thing with woman needing to be saved?

there was some lines/scenes that made me cringe. however i dont see how it was a male power fantasy? wonder woman scenes stole the show imo

So ... is there a reason people expected a Batman vs. Superman movie (of all movies) to have an anti-masculine, super feminist message or are they just plain stupid?

Re: Anyone seen the new batman film yet? Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh I don't have a problem with Lois Lane being saved? That's kind of her thing with Superman. But she is a gutsy and charming reporter.

I liked it more than I thought I would. It wasn't great, but it was way more watchable than Man of Steel was. They are trying way too hard to be super grimdark though. I enjoyed most of the acting (aside from Lex Luthor) Zack Snyder needs to quit it with the lightshows and dream sequences.

Re: Anyone seen the new batman film yet? Spoilers

(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i didnt like the dream sequences either, i think they didnt fit the sequences in the right places. the dream sequences happened too often at the start and i wasnt a fan of how often the scenes would fade/cut to black or white.

i agree there are valid complaints, but every superhero movie has suffered the same problems. it's good that they brought them to light, i hope if these issues arise in other comic films, it will be pointed out.

idk if they were trying too hard to be grimdark considering dc comics are grimdark (although the fx could have be toned down in some scenes), overall i enjoyed the movie and am intrigued about the future films.
