Fandom rant thread

Because I have one.

I've been mainlining a show on Netflix. The first two seasons are amazing, and then they completely destroy their own show in the third season. I'm gutted. Worse thing is, it's a few years old so everyone has already ranted about it and moved on with their lives. RAH

Dexter?

Re: Fandom rant thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Dexter was always such a mixed bag, that just kind of became a mess.
IMO
Season 1: Really good!
Season 2: All right...not bad, but not as good as season 1.
Season 3: A complete mess. Hated it.
Season 4: Pretty freaking good!!
Season 5: Forgettable. I don't think I finished it.
Season 6: Started out kind of promising but went downhill quickly, I can't recall finishing it.
Season 7: Didn't even tune in.
Season 8: Wait there's 8 seasons?! No one wonder people said the ending sucked.

Steven Universe fandom is getting slower and slower as we wait for a proper update schedule. I have no idea WTF is going on with this show anymore.

Re: Fandom rant thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been avoiding the fandom since CN leaked footage from future episodes because I don't want to get spoiled more than I already have. I wish they'd just air them already. And I hope the leakage doesn't have anything to do with the long delay.

Re: Fandom rant thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-30 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Except I don't think the leak caused the delay, they're probably just both symptoms of Cartoon Network not having their shit together regarding schedules and spoiler avoidance.

I know the Steven Bombs can be a real strain on the production team, but each episode is only 11 minutes long and it's been nearly three months. It's been greenlit for a third season, but we can only guess to when it'll get there.

Somehow I've become the go-to person for this other person in my fandom to talk to about her OCs and her whole separate little OC world within the canon world. It started out because I have pretty clear headcanons of the canon character who enslaves one of her OCs. And she wanted someone to talk with about headcanons. Okay, cool. So I stupidly gave her my fandom email.

But now she sends me multiple emails a day plus Tumblr messages. She wants to talk all the time. And if I don't respond for several emails she'll send me "hello?" I like her, and I kind of like her creations a bit. But I don't want to talk all the time. And I don't want to be basically creating her roleplays and fics for her. It is getting frustrating.

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Boundaries. You need to build them. It's a little tricky at this stage because she's already vaulted over your boundaries, but you need to build them back up.

You don't owe this person anything. You are not a fic/RP creation mill for her. Multiple emails a day & tumblr messages is seriously excessive. I'm sure you have a life outside of emailing her, right?

Tell her you don't have time, or you're busy, or you just don't want to talk all the time. Tell her you need space and breathing room. If she doesn't accept any of those things then she's not someone you want to be devoting any more time to.

I really, really hate trailers nowadays. They give way too much away.

Re: Fandom rant thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I try my best not to watch too many trailers if I can help it. The only thing that sucks is when I go to the theatres and then I am forced to sit through a trailer that reveals too much.

Also, I like to stay away from all those fan videos that review trailers or theorize what's going to happen in an upcoming highly anticipated film. I kept a relative distance to Star Wars: The Force Awakens before it came out, because I didn't want to get too hyped for it. You just set yourself up for disappointment if you start having too many expectations.

I love trailers. I don't mind being spoiled at all. It never ruins the movie experience for me to know what is going to happen.

Re: Fandom rant thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-28 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
They all have those repeated loud, unsettling noises like some kind of klaxon going off designed to get everyone's heart beating a little faster so we all think "So exciting!" It's way overused.

But I'd love to see someone make a new trailer for, say, Casablanca in the style of a modern trailer using that noise.

Do you mean the thing that the Inception trailer popularized? If so, I agree so much.

I don't even watch the "coming next week" previews on television shows, as they often give too much away for me. If I want to know how the movie/show is after knowing everything, I can always rewatch. I can never have a first experience of not knowing anything and watching it unfold if I'm spoiled. So I like to be as unspoiled as possible for everything. So, yes, I'm very with you and wish they wouldn't do that.

My most watched tv channel is the movie trailer one ;) I find the bigger the picture the more they give away. The less known or more subtle ones are better.

Whenever I want serious character study, canon exploring fic for a fandom, there's only fluff and smut. And vice versa. Every time.

I started reading this manga based on a light novel AND I KNOW WHAT WAS I THINKING HAVING ANY EXPECTATIONS AT ALL but it started out decent! The main character was actually alienated and bitter, there were some interesting gray moral, like actual gray morals, and he had a really sweet-but-kind-of-messed-up relationship with a young semi-human who had been enslaved as a small child and gone through trauma.
But no, it all goes to hell. She gets aged up (but still has the mind of a child!), the gray morality is shot to hell, having a shield that shoots cactus spines or whatever is really fucking beyond what a normal shield should do, even a magic one, and now he's surrounded by a posse of girls.

Fuck you author, this was almost good.

FTR, next time we have an argument about why some people don't like anime, I'm quoting this post. Because I feel like this is exactly what happens with approximately 100% of the anime that I try to watch.

Why is the Arrow fandom the way it is? How can one medium sized fandom be so horrific?

Re: Fandom rant thread

(Anonymous) 2016-03-29 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Because fandoms are full of people, and any time you get people together, there will be assholes?

(For more specificity, what is it about Arrow that makes it so horrific?)
