Let me tell you a secret: women aren't required to wear cute clothes or makeup.

You can wear comfy clothes and no makeup and as long you take showers and brush your hair you're offering a presentable image.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
They...never said they were a woman. Bit sexist for you to think that.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
...You're right. Sorry man, this is a sensitive topic for me.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess it's the sad fact of life that cute clothes aren't made for guys ever.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the whole emo/skinny jeans groups prove otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Makeup. Men don't wear makeup.

Not sexist, really. Cute clothes and makeup reads as very feminine.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
...did they say otherwise?

I mean, it's obviously true that women can wear what they want. But I'm pretty sure the secret is suggesting the opposite - that in a situation where they could absolutely get away with wearing "comfy" clothes and no makeup (because the fashion stick isn't typically very high, or at least, stereotypically, at geek spaces) OP wants to put more effort into their appearance.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
OP is implying that cute clothes, makeup, hair and others are required for a presentable image. No cute clothes, makeup, hair and others =/= presentable image.

I disagree that simply "comfy clothes" alone and showering constitutes what would typically be called a "presentable image". I don't think they have to be cute clothes, nor do you have to wear makeup, but most people would not call someone wearing old sweatpants and a baggy oversized anime T-shirt "presentable".

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Given the number of people wearing their pajamas in public, hearing that someone is making an effort to look nice, especially given how expensive cons are these days is encouraging.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Me, too, anon. Lol

I feel like I need to be extra cute and conventionally pretty when I'm doing fandom stuff, just to make a statement that anyone can be a geek and not all geeks don't shower. I mean, I enjoy dressing up, so it isn't like I'm "changing myself" - I just can't be bothered in most day-to-day life activities.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
This is me at conventions. Sure, I do have fandom tees and things and wear them, but I also do my hair and make sure I'm not a smelly neckbeard-Simpsons-comics-store-guy equivalent.

Apparently a lot of fans do this, because most of the fans I meet at cons look very nice and are not stereotypically smelly.

There are always those two dudes who are, though...

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same. Back when I read comics regularly, I wanted to look neat and tidy and non-nerdy going to the comic book store, even though NO ONE other than the store employees and other patrons were going to see me in there. It's not like there was someone lurking, waiting to crack a "get a life!" joke who would be so completely thrown by how much I did not resemble a stereotypical loser geek. That is a really good analogy! "Here I am, not being a stereotype." *whistles* haha.

You're not a dick, you're just self conscious like the rest of the normal people you're trying to pass as (hint: you already are).

Or if you want to stick with dick, maybe pretend it's some kind of intimidation tactic against other fandom people.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think they're saying that? It sounds like they don't want to be judged by people who aren't in fandom because they are representing it.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe you are a dick, but those who don't give a fuck and act out the stereotype are much, much worse, so don't feel too bad.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You are the dick.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't know what some people have to endure dude.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I do the hair, makeup, clothes, jewelry, shoes thing all the time. Some women are really shitty to me about it. Like my girlyness is a judgement on them or something, when I couldn't care less what other people are wearing.

Given how a lot of the fandoms are, I don't blame you for trying to look your best in case you get associated with them

I imagine if you admitted you were in a truly bad fandom while dressed down in sweats, people might not have as high an opinion of you as they would if you were dressed all fancy

(Anonymous) 2016-04-12 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to do this when I attended conventions. Good on you, anon, for taking the time to shine.

I want to say "You should dress however you like and who cares what others think!" but then I think of the girl on my college campus who walks around wearing cat ears and gartered stockings OVER knee length shorts in a clashing pattern and I start to feel like those who dress nicely and "normally" most of the time and reserve their exceptionally eccentric fashion choices for conventions deserve a bit of thanks, honestly.

Also, kudos for not giving in to the pressure that I KNOW (from a lifetime of experience) is there for geeky/nerdy girls to avoid classically feminine self-presentation. The people who act like "only FAKE geek girls care about being stylish" can gtfo.
