I feel bad for practically everyone in the Batman universe.

I find it sad, because I essentially do not believe people are ever irredeemable - and if they give indication of wanting to be but think they can't - well, that's sad to me.

I'm female and I don't have some weird obsession with Joker, but he's still really sympathetic in these panels.

He's a dick in the graphic novel, but he is definitely sympathetic here.

I get being sad about the Joker, but no. I feel worse for Barbara.

I hate that Batmans reaction to the rape and violence committed against his friend was to offer to help the rapist.

+1, Batman is one of my favorite DC characters but I agree that was so fucked up. Tbh The Killing Joke is very lurid and the only reason people remember it is because of 'the shock factor'.

I remember seeing a comic tackling the issue of how Batman acted in The Killing Joke. I can't remember who the writer/s were though.

You're right. Joker sodomized Comissioner Gordon.

I hate it too, but it's still the logical extension of his "no killing" ethos. If you don't kill them and can't permanently and securely lock them up, the other option is rehabilitation. He's got to stand by that despite what it does to people around him like Barbara.

Babs wasn't raped, Alan Moore clarified it as such. Both she and Gordon were sexually assaulted though.

Yeah, that's pretty fucked up. Feeling kinda bad for him isn't outside the realm of possibility, or sense. But worse than for somebody he decided to attack JUST to drive somebody ELSE nuts??
