Invent fandom wank here

Can be SJW, angry man, rad!fem, whatever. Pretend you are a Tumblrite/MRA/whatever and get outraged by something (that these groups haven't caught onto yet). Take something and be outraged about it.

*should be fandom related.

*everyone else can vote for most creative and lols-iest wank.

Why is sci-fi, something set in the FUTURE so regressive and anti-woman, when fantasy, set in the a horrible part of history for women is so progressive.

I kinda actually want to know, but I've never seen any SJW / Anti SJW wank about it, so... there it is.

There are more female fantasy authors than sci-fi authors, would be my guess.

That said I'm an avid reader of sci-fi/fantasy myself and haven't noticed this trend at all. Fantasy - especially some of the stuff from the 90s and earlier - can bring mouthbreathing misogyny with the best of them.

not sure what having fucked up sinuses has to do with misogyny.

That would be a really interesting thing to analyze, although I think you'd have to limit the scope a lot to really set up/get an idea of/ the level of contrast.

Re: Invent fandom wank here

tl;dr version: science fiction is much more masculinely-coded than fantasy is, and female authors and female-identified subgenres have been a part of the genre in a more substantial way than in SF

like, one of the definitive stories of the John Campbell era in sci-fi is "The Cold Equations", which is literally about an astronaut throwing a girl out of an airlock because math. it's really not hard to see that style of science fiction might not be more masculine-centered.

Re: Invent fandom wank here

SF (especially hard SF and military SF) tend to be written by male authors and feature male power fantasies. There's an ugly prejudice in the genre that women can't write decent SF, and they can't write hard SF because... science is a man's world? Apparently? Accompanying that, you'll see prejudice against fantasy (especially newer, popular sub genres of urban/paranormal fantasy) because they're predominantly written by women and therefore aren't "real SF/F" with the implication that they're trashier because they contain characters with feelings instead of characters who kick ass and have adventures... because in some peoples' mind, you can't do both!

A lot of the old school SF fans/writers fit this description. You can google "Rabid Puppies", "Sad Puppies" and names like Vox Day, Larry Correia and Brad Torgersen, but only if you want to fall down a depressing rabbithole of antiquated bigotry. It's a messed up dynamic, no mistake.

Really? That seems to have been the central issue in SF&F fandom over the last five years or so. It's just happening in different spaces from the whole art/gif/fanfic/tumblr scene.

Re: Invent fandom wank here

This. It's a common topic of discussion --arguably THE main topic of discussion-- but mostly among older fans, via blogs and message boards rather than tumblr.

I think this really depends on the sci-fi you're reading. My father (a ginormous feminist) is always talking about the awesome, progressive, feminist sci-fi novels he's reading. But a big part of that is probably because he makes a point of mainly reading sci-fi written by women.

I do think you probably have a point though, if one were to look at the entire genre and sort of average it out.

Re: Invent fandom wank here

(Anonymous) 2016-04-24 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
Because Scifi is about cold emotionless things. Men can relate to that more than women, so more men write in Scifi. More men = less compassion for women.

Fantasy is about people, emotions, and interpersonal relationships, things that women excel at, so more women write fantasy. More women = More compassion for women and other minorities.

Why do all video game npcs have conventionally gendered names? It's an outrage that villager #385 isn't a hulking man named Susie and waif #589 isn't named Ferdinand. It's 2016, we should be over gendered names and reinforcing gendered names through video games.

I CAN'T BELIEVE 101 DALMATIANS HAD ACTUAL BLACKFACE IN IT! LOOK AT THESE SHITLORD DOGS PRETENDING TO BE BLACK! #blackbreedsmatter*

What's next? European dogs taking the movie roles of proud Basenjis and Rhodesian Ridgebacks?

I couldn't manufacture enough fake outrage. I don't know what the SJW terminology is these days :(

*It seems there is actually no proof for the whole "black dogs are adopted less" idea. And some research has found dogs with more black in their coat are actually adopted more!

IIRC, the idea that black dogs are adopted less stems partly from the fact that some of the more prominent "vicious" breeds are predominantly black-furred. A lot of people will rule out dogs with significant Doberman or Rottweiler heritage because of the stereotypes about the breeds (and a lot of the people who won't rule them out are people who probably shouldn't be allowed within 100 yards of any dog). It's become less of an issue with rescues becoming more prominent, but it still crops up, and the problem's made the rounds through animal welfare circles more than once.

The rest of it seems to have its roots in the fact that black cats really are adopted less, between the lingering superstitions and the fact that they tend to be less eye-catching than cats with other fur colors and patterns. (Especially since one of the common stressed kitty behaviors is to hide, and black fur won't show up in a hidey-hole the way white or orange will.)

Lord of the Rings and the fantasy genre in general is really fucking ableist to short people. Dwarves are a real thing and making them "non-human" is offensive as fuck.

Oh! Oh! Let me give it a try!

---

I can't believe there's people who enjoy stuff like age difference. If the characters you ship are over two months old apart from each other then there is a clear age difference between them and therefore a clear power imbalance. I can't believe people don't find this kind of thing problematic. :/

Oh yeah? Well if the characters you ship are less than 15 years apart in age, you're a filthy ageist.

The sad thing is that I have actually seen a ship involving a 17 yr old and 19 yr old get called "pedophillia."

LOL someone was starting wank in my fandom because the popular pairing is about 12 years apart in age. They were claiming that everyone who shipped it were pedophiles even though in the game they are both adults. Crazy shit.
